| Post subject: | Bluetec diesel technology..is it on ours? |
In the May 2006 issue of Petersen's 4Wheel & Off Road magazine, there is a big article on the new ULSD fuel that we'll all be using later this year. The article talks heavily about DaimlerChrysler products, and even has a couple of pictures of the CRD and engine. One part of the article talks about the new "Bluetec" technology that DCX is using on the 3.0L CRD in the Grand Cherokee. The article says that the 3.0L CRD has "a diesel particulate filter and a catalytic converter that transformed NOx into nitrogen and water vapor". My question is this...are our 2.8L CRDs ready for the new ULSD fuel? And also, do our CRD engines have a particulate filter and a catalytic converter?? If so, is this the reason our CRDs stink so bad and smell differently than every other diesel engine on the market?? |

No. CRD's do not have the that tech yet... I think Jeep will have it by 07 (according to motorweek ... or Autoline Detroit... one of those) But AFAIK, we are ready for low sulfur. - Jay Edit: we do have a cat |

Yep, if you read the section in the owners manual about fuel, even for the '05's, it recommends using fuel with less than 15 ppm sulfur (ULSD) if available. As far as Bluetec, no we don't have that. That involves a catalytic converter that uses urea (ammonia) injection, has a tank you have to refill. If nothing else, that would cut down on the need to find a rest area, having your own built-in potty tank! |
