Gents,

What's the basic procedure for inspecting and subsequently replacing rockers and or lifters? Do I have to pull the head to do it? Special VM tools required?

Thanks,

Miyanovich

You need to pull the valve cover to inspect the rockers and the timing tools are necessary if you want confidence in putting it back together properly. 3-5 hour job on average for the teardown.

Keith,

Do you sill rent out the timing tool set? If not, other sources?

Thanks man,

Miyanovich

Miyanovich - if you check around on the site I know Sir Sam has posted pictures of rockers with crushed bearings and a couple of folks (galatron and turbobill) have done the job and posted pictures. Apparently one of the hardest parts is getting the rockers to stay in place while the cover is put back on (I gather they just kind of sit there).

I have done this job a few times now. You need a new intake manifold gasket, miller tools vm 1052, 1053, & 1085 to get the timing set & cam gears on/off/torqued correctly. May as well get new o rings & copper crush washers for the injectors too. You can make the manifold alignment bolts with scrap bolts with the ends cut off. These allow the manifold to go straight down when reinstalling as the rockers just sit on the valves & are held down only with pressure from the cams. The rollers on the rockers shouldn't have any play. If they do, replace them. Unfortunately if you don't (where my 2nd CRD is at now), after a while the cams begin to dig into the side of the rockers & the cams have to be replaced as well..

Racer,

The belt was off four teeth. When the turbo blew, I was about 1.5 miles from my mom's house, in the middle of a steep hill, in the winter, with a 3 year old child and a 2 month old baby in the car. I made the decision to limp it to my mom's, not knowing what the problem was. I had to pull the rest of that hill, and the hill going to my mom's house. So, two steep hills. I had to red-line the RPM's to pull the hills. The high RPM's not only backed out the flex plate hub bolts, trashed the flex plate hub, but also caused the timing to jump, and caused the pistons to come into contact with the valves, breaking the rockers. One of the cylinders was borescoped last week, and that's how we are aware of the piston / valve contact. We do not have visual confirmation of broken rockers / lifters. Miller tools arriving Friday, valve cover coming off, and rockers will be inspected.

My question for everyone is, when we do the rockers, we're replacing the timing belt too - might as well, no need to take a chance. Even though I've only got 64,000 miles on the Jeep, should I just go ahead and do the water pump too, since we're swapping the timing belt anyway?

As far as you are going to be into the engine I'd do the water pump just because.

Roger that.

Update: Miller tools came in on Friday. Valve cover tear down happened today. All rockers on the exhaust side are destroyed. All rockers on the intake side are fine. That explains why we had good compression readings.

Rocker / Lifter sets arriving tomorrow. Everything back together on Friday, hopefully.
