| Post subject: | At the end of my Rope |
Alright, so I came here having some issues and have done a lot to try and help resolve them, but I'm honestly getting to the end of my rope, and I'm about to hang myself with it, haha. MARTA (TN Emissions) will not pass me with a CEL on... so I cannot get my plates without this darn thing going out. Here were my codes when I started: P0101 P1267 P1265 P1261 P1140 First I cleaned the Air Filter and Re-Oiled it - K&N. Since then, I changed the EGR Valve (Didn't realize I didn't have to, we'll get to that) Sent the ECU to GDE for an ECO tune, and got it back. - > Still had CEL Cleaned the MAF Sensor on the Inlet box - > Still had CEL Cleaned the MAP Sensor on the Intake - > Still had CEL Replaced all 4 glow plugs with Etecnu from Dieselglowplug.com - > Still have CEL Here's the real kick in the head, check out this picture of the OBD scanner I borrowed from Auto Zone (Borrowed for a $150 Deposit): ![]() Note that the CEL is still on and the OBD II Scanner is showing NO CODES. Help? Thoughts? Borrow some rope? -Frustrated as hell in Central Tennessee- |

Ok, wait a minute, did you use the scanner to CLEAR the codes, or did they clear by themselves after you did the work? If you didn't clear them via the scanner, I'd do that now and see if that doesn't cure the problem. |

This picture was taken after I used that scanner to clear all codes about 5 times. The CEL NEVER went out and it NEVER showed any codes to begin with... |

If it can't read 'em, it can't clear 'em. Many scanners are incompatible with the CRD. |

Tranny or ABS faults will turn on cell. Need DRB3 reader. Jeff |

What about the scanner that GDE rents or sells with the tune packages? Can you clear with that? Maybe call Keith and ask him. |

I purchased the GDE scaner, it has read, and cleared all the codes from both mine and my fathers CRD, as well as turn the cell light off. Hope this helps and good luck. |

I have another type of scanner, called the AutoEnginuity scanner. Not worth the price I paid for it, but it can clear codes from just about every module in this silly system. |

"Sent the ECU to GDE for an ECO tune". If it was me I'd be having a conversation with GDE, and go from there. |

Not all codes are in the ECU - Some are stored in the BCM, some in the ABS module, some in the transmission... Any of the others could be the culprit throwing the idiot light. You might want to visit a local dealer's shop area and offer some beer money to a tech at the end of the day to spend 5 minutes just erasing all the module codes. I did that and for $20, got to mess with a DRB3 for a few minutes on mine. Couldn't do what I wanted, but that is because their menu system was programmed by 3 drunks and a monkey... And they let the monkey do the user interface design. |

I finally found the problem. I had two bad relays, the ASD relay, and the high blower relay that were bad. So after a new EGR I didn't need, an ECO tune from GDE, cleaning the MAF and MAP sensors, four new glow plugs, two new relays my CEL is permanently out, and I got my plates!!! So now I am saving up for the timing belt and water pump etc. |

What is an ASD and blower relay? Thanks! |

ASD is the Automatic Shut Down relay. Thing is, I didn't think the engine would run at all if that relay was bad - You pull that with the engine running... And it isn't anymore. |

It ran fine, but I was getting a low voltage fault on the glow plugs, which was caused by a short in the ASD Relay. Engine still ran fine and shut down fine, but apparently that Relay controls the glow plugs as well. Also the short in this relay was draining my battery by keeping the glow plugs warm most of the time. Heh. |

Now that is interesting... How fast did your battery drain? I've been having a drain issue where if I leave my CRD alone for more than a day or so, the battery will probably be low enough to barely complete a startup. I *think* it is being caused by my XM radio however... But I'm open to looking elsewhere too. You might want to look at your glowplugs tho, b/c from what I understand, the ECU doesn't just pass full power to the plugs, it pulses the relay and the circuit to "simulate" a 7 volt feed from a 12 volt actual supply. If your ASD relay was somehow passing power to the glowplugs all the time, they may have been getting full 12 volts, which means they are probably killed. |

One of the first things I did on my 3.7 was replace the ASD relay because that was the fault I was getting, and the engine would intermittently shut down. Replacing the relay didn't fix anything, it was in that wiring under the power distribution center. I unbolted that, uncovered the whole thing and cleaned every connection before the problem went away. Later, I also ended up needing a battery and an alternator. I think the ASD was draining the battery as well. |

My battery lasted about 2-3 days if I didn't drive the Jeep, and it wouldn't start the vehicle, in fact the doors would barely unlock. I replaced all four of my glow plugs 2 days before I found the issue with the ASD Relay, so I'm not worried about them being fried. |

I'm sure that the GDE ecotune will prove worth it. I tow a lot with mine, and the extra torque is very valuable indeed. Dragging a 5,000 lb WALL up an 11,000 foot mountain was even doable at speed. The mileage improvement is a big help, too. Best I ever got was 14 mpg (wind resistance is the killer) before, since GDE I've broken 16 mpg several times, and 34.7 mpg not towing. |

Drewd wrote: What is an ASD and blower relay? Thanks! The ASD relay is the auto shutdown relay. It provides ground circuits for all of the various items that need it. injectors, etc. When the ASD relay is triggered by the ECU, like during an engine shutdown, the ASD relay energizes and the ground circuit is lost for sensors and injectors. this kills the engine. The relay is normally closed so it does not need power for the engine to run, so if you provide it power or remove it it will kill the engine. |
