Post subject:  Shift lever and car not starting

My '05 CRD has had a problem with not starting due to the lever not been fully pushed into the PARK position. The car will click at some relay in the cab and after I firmly push the lever into P it starts.

Something is out of adjustment. I have thought my battery was bad but boost it off and the car starts. It will start fine many times and then without of the blue it clicks again acting as thought the battery is bad.

Does any of this sound familiar to you guys?

Thanks,

Tom

Yeah just need to adjust the shift interlock cable located under the center console.

My shifter cable got stuck to key interlock and I couldn't remove the key. I cut the cable and push forward and problem is solved. Don't do this if you have kids.

There's a two piece spring loaded plastic pushrod in the shifter that breaks and causes one or more interlock issues e.g. can't start, can't remove key and/or non functioning shift lock button. If you can pull your shifter from D to 2 without pressing the unlock button on the front of the knob you probably have a broken rod.

I fabricated a replacement metal pushrod. The only other alternatives are a full replacement shifter assembly, $$$, or snip the cable and live without the safety features.

If you have interlock issues be sure to report it at http://www.nhtsa.gov/
