Not much support for this being a 400k motor and the reason folks put the 4BT into conversions isnt just because its a reliable motor, its because its not too complicated. Look at the 7.3 powerstroke, its a great motor, very reliable and there are literally, over a million of them. Very few are put into non-Ford conversions, because they are complicated. I'd put the 2.8 in the same boat, too complicated for a swap. Obviously, there have been 2.8 swaps, but it is unlikely to happen at the rate of 4BTs.

I am working on my second gas to diesel conversion, using a VW 1.9 AAZ (IDI not TDI). These werent in any US sourced car, but they are still popular for swaps because they are easy (1 wire) for electronics.

Anyhow, I wouldnt mind picking up a low mileage 2.8 if I found one to keep in the garage for when the liberty blows up some day. I hope you are right and it doesnt happen until 400k, that would be awesome:)

With out EGR and with the use of a High Zinc 10W-40 Synthetic Diesel oil instead of the crap the EPA wants on the market under the pretense of preserving emissions components, the 2.8L could be a long life engine. But thanks to Government regulations based upon Junk Science with some true facts thrown it because it is impossible to use 100% fiction, many diesel engines including the 2.8L will never live their lifespan.

I'm banking on 250K out of mine.

GDE and Full Synthetic fluids since I bought it. Hope for the best.

The problem with buying a used motor that you don't need yet is storage degradation. We've seen issues with this at my work. Motors need to be coated internally with something that will prevent rust and yet melts back into the oil when put into service. The spray in coatings I've heard about last about 6 months and then need a re-application. Not many of us are studious enough to maintain a stored motor correctly. Another option would be to store it on an engine test cradle and start it up once a month or so...
