Post subject:  PML Transmission Pan

I just bought a new pan for the transmission today. I went with the PML low profile step pan ( p/n: 11078 ) and was told by Dave at PML that I am the first to order this pan for the CRD. Anyways, I am hoping this pan will fit with the Mopar transmission skid plate. I currently do not have a skid plate for the transmission, but I am hoping to get one soon. Does anyone know where I can get one cheap? Or maybe there is some one in Oregon with a transmission skid plate that wouldn't mind letting me test fit theirs after I install the new pan!

I know his write-up is for the deep pan, but Eurekaboy's photos might tell you what you need (short of putting a plate on):

Keep us posted, though. I've been wanting to replace the factory pan for years. It's just....not good.

Looking at the part info it appears to be 1" deeper than the stock pan. There isn't much room between the stock pan and the Mopar transmission bash plate (when I look at mine), but I seem to recall that someone here used washers as spacers to lower the bash plate slightly to clear the PML pan.

The link above uses that method, but is also a deeper pan. If you look at the ruler shots, 1 inch might be doable (or at least only require slight skid mods).

Thanks for the replies guys. I am supposed to get the pan on Thursday and I hope to install it this weekend. I just need to find the skid plate now. Maybe I will check the junk yards.

Got my new pan installed today. Once I had the pan on and tightened down, I noticed what at first I thought was a small hole on the back side of the pan. Upon closer inspection it only appeared to be an imperfection in the casting and only superficial, so no big deal. That is what I thought! After I filled the pan and got things warmed up, I got back under the vehicle to double check my work and found out it was indeed a hole and was slowly dripping. So I guess I am going to have to get in contact with PML on Monday since I am pretty sure they are not open on the weekend. Has anyone here had to deal with PML's customer service? From what I have seen, they actually do make a good product and seem to take pride in what they sell. Has anyone else had experience with PML products?

Hopefully they will overnight me a new pan and reimburse me for the cost of the transmission fluid. ATF +4 isn't cheap and that transmission holds plenty! This is my first time posting pics, so hopefully I do it correctly. The hole in the picture looks much worse than it really is.

Well, I couldn't figure it out. I read the posts about putting up pictures and tried it a bunch of different ways, but I still could not make it work.

Your images were fine. For each one, you just highlight the address and click "img" at the top. It puts the "image tag" before and after the link for you.

P.S. Stinks about the pan. I'm sure PML will get things straightened out.

That's a real bummer. If you clean your drain pan real good and make sure you get all debris out of it you should be able to reuse the oil. Worst case you could even strain it through a clean rag to catch anything that might have fallen in the pan while you were working.

I would drain it into a clean bucket and reuse it.

While your waiting to get the new one, just put a self-tapper screw into that hole with alittle RTV around it and it should work just fine until your next tranny service (why go to all that trouble and mess if you don't have to).

I have always been reluctant in draining fluid and reusing it, even if it is brand new oil. Maybe I am paranoid. Guess I'll see what PML will do for me. I am going to wait to mess with the pan until Monday after I talk with PML. I had an experience with the Jeep dealership when I bought my CRD used. Went to do my first oil change and found out the stock drain plug had been over-torqued and the hex socket was stripped out. Tried to extract it myself, but only broke the extractors in the plug. The dealership told me they had changed the oil before selling it to me so I knew they were to blame. When I took the CRD back in, I got into an argument with them- they did not want to fix it because they said I already messed with it! The dealership eventually fixed it after putting me through a bunch of hassle. Anyway, I am going to err on the side of caution and talk with PML before I touch the pan again.

Don't blame you I wouldn't touch it until some pictures were taken with it leaking and sent to PML. Then and only then would I even think of taking it off or trying to plug the hole.

Any updates

Post subject:  Re: PML Transmission Pan

Forgot to update. Contacted PML and they were apologetic and promptly sent me a new pan. The new pan fits and works great and gave me a good spot to install a trans temp sender. I would have no problem recommending PML products to others based on my experience. I still have not put a skid plate under the new pan, so can't comment there. Any one want to get rid of factory trans/ transfer case skid plates?

If you were closer, I'd let you try mine on for size just to see if they fit. I've been wanting to get one of these pans for a while, but I don't have a lot of extra time to modify my transmission skid and/or fabricate a new one... Any Oregon folks want to have a meet/greet with 'ski?

I will check clearance on mine based on PML's dimensions above. I'd love to have one too!

Wouldn't we all to bad it won't work without some spacing up at least with my current set of kids.

How much space is between the ASFIR and your pan? I have the OEM skid but would like to upgrade.

By measurement which I did months ago so don't hold me to it. It was right over and inch if I remember correctly.

The stock skid with stock pan has appx only 5/8" clearance, so it appears to be a no-go unless you modify the skid by removing the stop part. Then it MIGHT fit.
