Post subject:  Another dead Libby HELP PLEASE !!!!! Solved !!!

So I went into the office to drop off some papers and when I got back in the car she wont start, I mean, not even crank, click, nothing, all the gauges come up, all lights in panel light up and then go off except for the check engine light, but that one is always on as I have the MAP (??) sensor unplugged. The security red light goes on for 2 secs and then goes off. Got her towed home, ouch (37 miles $245.00), the wrecker driver was like  yeah baby !!!

Anyways. nothing, no symptoms before, just died.
Battery is fine, I even hooked up another battery and no difference.
I have fuel, it wont even crank....

Did some searches on the forum and saw it happened to a few guys back in 2010, for what I gathered most were the ECM (??) computer, one guy had wires chewed up by squirrels, checked for that but found nothing.

I called green diesel eng to see if they know of this problem and to see if I could do a ECM swap, but they were closed today for the weekend...
Called a couple of dealers and got quoted $1021.00 and $794 for a new ECM, they would not quote replacing as, obviously they don't know that's what's wrong with the car. One of the service guys said it could be just a single component on the ECM or even a transmission issue.

Right now I have 2 questions for the forum:

1) can the codes be read by a scanner even if it wont start?

2) I've seen some scanners names on the forums but could not find which one is the one Green Diesel eng uses. I would like to get the tune once all this is behind and figured might as well spend the money in something I can use to ship to them for the software to be sent back to me. Does anyone out there knows which brand they use?

Thanks !!!!

I believe you just have to turn the key to the "on" position without starting it to pull codes. There is the key trick to pull codes without scanner. I had it work once and I was so stunned that I got to work I wasn't ready to write them down when they showed up. Couldn't ever do it agian so I finally bought a scanner. I have a Acron one and a scanguage II.

Yes a scanner will pull codes if it isn't running, as long as the system has power.

Thanks!!!
I tried to find how to do that (have done it in several past vehicles) but did not find it.
Just got back from Napa, bought a cheap reader and I got P0102, I'll look and see what that one is, no other codes.

Yep, what I thought P0102 is the MAF sensor unplugged (which I already knew)...

That right there cost me $70.00

I know this one is not going to be cheap......

What about something simple like the starter? And you can get a map sensor at advance auto or any place for 20 or 30.

no crank, no click
it does not sound like a code issue

it sounds like basic electronics - no electricity

there a switch bar behind the key - if that's broken - it doesn't know the key is turned

Actuator rod - try that

Wouldn't that have some sort of "warning" such as wired noises or faulty functionality before it goes? I had one going before on a different car an old Nova and when it went I knew what it was because it had started showing signs earlier, no such thing in this case....

Worth a try though, I'll check it tomorrow...

Thank you!!!

Another good thing to try, I'll see what I find on this department tomorrow, thank you for the link.

Thank you guys!!!! Now I'm going to call it a day and pop a cold one

I had a F-350 with the 7.3L that one morning it cranked fine that night not even a click or anything. Seemed the starter never released completely and burnt it self up but because of all noise my open exhaust made I never even heard it whining.

you did check the battery..with a load tester..and a meter right?

batteries fail in many ways..the red top tend to fail almost open..you get the right voltage with a small load..like the dash lights and such but not enough to crank..sometimes not enough to get a click

others just fad..not enough to run the dash correctly..and it'll act very strange under a low voltage condition. things like 1/2 the odometer is faded out..

This is exactly what happened to me. drove into the yard after coming back from the airport. Next morning, no start, lights up, power, try to jump the starter, no good, ended up being the rod broke. Happened to several others, check it out.

I was going to say x2 on this. My jeep was towed twice for a dead battery and a dead keyfob device thing in the Jeep. I would get lights, but NOTHING when I turned the key. The dealership replaced my security thingy in the jeep first and that worked for two days. Then when it did the same think, they replaced the battery. The ECU seems to need a perfect battery or it won't bother to turn on. I've never had the problem again.

Exactly what happened. Problem fixed. :pepper:

The little crappy aluminum and plastic actuator rod had a broken end and it caused the starter switch not to turn. Went to Napa and changed both and everything is back to normal.

Thank you all for the help, much appreciated !!

I jumped the starter switch as described here
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=61233&p=678574&hilit=+brother#p678574
to rule out the starter and other issues.

Once confirmed went to Napa and got the equivalent to: ignition starter switch AIRTEX / WELLS Part # 1S5932 and switch actuator pin DORMAN Part # 924704. Both for about $78.00 (in stock), then followed this video on how to change them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SKQpbn9Zjo.
All of that can be found following the link ATXKJ posted above. THANKS ATXKJ !!!!

Later, talking to my wife I realized that the key on my car gets turned an average of 8 to 10 times a day, probably a bit more than the average, it will be worth having the $20.00 spare part in the trunk just in case......

great!!

another problem solved..:)

so it wasn't my suggestion..its still solved..:)

the last time the battery in my wife's jeep died I thought it might be the pin, like yours, but it wasn't..Just another common problem to remember.
sometimes I think a key pad with a 4 digit number and a toggle switch would be easier.

I agree, see, in sailing we have this little simple rule KISS (keep it simple, stupid) why do they have to complicate the bejesus out of a simple switch, that's all it is, but no, let's make the wheel spin so it catches the pin which pushes the rod attached to the spring which puts pressure on the lever which actuates the ....... you get the idea.

Anyway... thank you all for the help !!!!

This exact thing happened to my mom's 05 Neon as well. I have also had a similar condition in a 94 minivan (back of the tumbler has a pot metal ring and the corner broke off. You could turn the key backwards and put it on accessory but not forwards all the way to crank it.

That problem took about 5 minutes to figure out for my uncle. He got in, tried to start it got out and checked battery connections and plug wires tried again then looked at it thoughtfully then got back in and started disassembling the steering column. Apparently this type of failure is kind of common.

(the stealership wanted to replace the whole steering column in my moms neon. The part that was actually the problem was less than $10)
