| Post subject: | Shocks and OCI interval question |
The Liberty needs some new shocks, so it's time to buy em! When I took it in for an oil change their only comment was the shocks were ready, and it was no surprise from the ride on these fine rural Iowa highways. I've looked around, and am leaning the KYB GR2 shocks. I've found cheaper, but these sounded like they were a good balance between cost/performance. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/KYB-331017/Front shocks - 69.55 EA http://www.summitracing.com/parts/KYB-344404/Rear Shocks - 38.95 EA 217 dollars total, seemed to be the cheapest place I found them. Any comments, concerns, etc? My other question is what oil change interval I should be running with. I'm running Rotella-T 5W40 synthetic with a Napa Gold filter. Not sure what the recommended interval would be. Also, I've read about people using a different filter in place of the 400S, was it the FL1A filter? I looked at the two the other day at the store and they appeared to have the same mounting face, just a wider and deeper body for the FL1A. Thank you for your insight and replies guys! |

Oil and filters are cheap but turbos and engines are not hence I use a 6,000 mi. oil and filter change interval. I'm not where I can check my parts numbers but the NAPA Gold is a good filter and you can use the OEM stock size or the oversize one but be sure to use the proper amount of oil (6.3 and 7 qts respectively) regardless of dip stick reading to avoid oil overfill. |

We use the equivalent to the PH8A used on many Ford and Chrysler vehicles. I don't recommend Fram though. Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2 |

The official oil change interval for the Libby CRD in the US is 12,500 miles, unless the engine sees "severe service." But if you read the official definition of "severe service," you will conclude that EVERY CRD is in severe service, meaning that the official OCI in real life is 6,250 miles. The Rotella T6 5w-40 is a fine oil, and should easily go the full distance for you. Change it at 6,250 miles, and life will be good. Do be aware that a 5w-40 DIESEL RATED oil is officially the second choice oil recommended by Jeep. First choice is 0w-40, of which there is only one I know of on the market, the Mobil 1 product. Personally, I prefer the 5w-40, too, as I tow a heavy trailer through the mountains a lot, and I think the slightly heavier oil serves better in the heat. |

There is a thread somewhere here that GDE stated that 5w is too light and that there has been significant rocker degradation on engines approaching 200K. Keith goes on to state that this oil is only recommended in the US, elsewhere in the world limited rocker degradation and higher weight oils |

The rocker arm degradation could be oil or soot related. It is very difficult to isolate which component is the root cause. Soot is abrasive and it seems the needle bearings in the rocker arm assembly are a fairly soft material. I would most likely lean on an overabundance of soot contamination leading to the shorter rocker arm life. |

Since getting the turbo kit/EGR delete and running the EHM, the oil isn't black anymore even at the required 6K mi. change (more like a dark shade of brown). Which leads to another question............With these mods, and about a 90% reduction in contaminate levels, can one extend the intervals? |

Our test vehicles have oil/filter changed every 8,000 miles to keep it simple and a new paper element air filter at the same time. The GDE tunes for the KJ are very good for extending the engine longevity along with the other benefits. |

Quite literally JUST ordered the GDE Eco Tune. Now if only I didn't have a holiday weekend to extend my wait to receive the tuner and get to work! Thank you for the input on the OCI. I'm currently right about 6,000 miles on my T6. EHM and ORM are in effect, as well, don't think I mentioned that. With the EHM and the eco tune, would it be possible to extend an OCI by changing the oil filter part way through (and adding fresh oil to replace what is lost in the process)? I read the manual when I got it, and I actually qualified for the "normal service" with my drive. Now I have almost all highway driving but have to stop and turn onto several highways. I get a very steady mpg reading every tank between 23.25 and 25.25 by my math. However, I have noticed that my speedometer reads slow (3-4 miles per hour, 75 on my speedometer is 71ish on the gf's Edge and her dad's Grand Prix GXP). My tires 225/75R16 BFG Long Trail's are almost to the wear bars but will last until winter, so they're a little shorter then new but I don't think that's enough to account for this difference. Anybody else experience this? Or am I crazy? Also can't help but wonder how that impacts my mileage. I've counted on the highway with trip meter and I come up short on the green markers vs my counter hitting a mile, and map quest/google maps vs my trip meter comes short heading to work. Still, only variation on my mileage is basically how much AC I'm having to use, and how much I'm in the parking lot at work talking to the gf with the AC on (15-20 minutes tops). Anybody have input to share regarding shocks? Thank you for reading, I appreciate it very much! |

Off to change the oil today. Went with the oversize filter and 7qts of oil that papaindigo recommended. Just seems more efficient to use a full 7qts rather then leaving 3/4 of a quart hanging out, and possibly forgetting about it the next change. I went with a purolator filter vs the Motorcraft FL1A. It felt slightly heavier. I've always owned Ford, and always went with Motorcraft, but as mentioned the purolator felt slightly heavier. Hope I didn't make a mistake, though. I hope that I can get the GDE tune all taken care of before the weekend, even with the short holiday week. I'm excited to see and feel the difference! From reading around in a few recent topics, the whole speedometer thing has been covered. Still hoping for some input about the shocks, if anybody has some. |

@Tiarnon, if you qualify for the 12,500 mile "normal service" in the owner's manual, then in theory you should be able to go the full 12,500 mile distance without even an oil filter change in the middle. I know that Mobil 1 5w-40 oil (aka Mobil 1 TDT) is well known to the VW TDI crowd to be very easily capable of going very much longer than the 10,000 mile OCIs specified for those engines. Some TDI owners have found that oil to be still good after 20,000 and even 30,000 miles. They have done this by doing oil analyses at 5,000 mile intervals, although I'm not sure I'd want to go that far with this engine. And were I you, I'd pull samples at 6,000, 9,000 and 12,000 miles through several oil changes, just to be sure. |

KYB's are a good "bang for bucks" option, IMHO... Had these before and they ride well, plus made in Japan rather than China |

Thanks for the reply, gives some peace of mind. I look forward to ordering them soon. Unfortunately (Well, not really lol) I decided to go GDE Eco Tune, so I'm tighter on free money to spend on the Jeep for a little bit. Was hoping to take care of everything with it today, but I'm not sure if it'll get here in time. |
