greetings all, at last oil change, noticed a bit of oil leakage coming from front of engine, but just got around to tracing it down. there appears to be a fair amount of oil leaking from each side of the bottom of the radiator. (live 5 miles down a dirt road, so there's a fair amount of dirt mixed w/oil) any ideas what this might be? thanks a lot |

The transmission cooler is on the bottom of the AC condensor and there are transmission line running on each side. Leakage from these could collect near bottom of radiator. |

If it is oil and not tranny juice, it could potentially be leakage from the intercooler, but that would be bad b/c it would mean your intercooler is damaged. The oil comes from the CCV into the front of the turbo, and coats everything in the intake system with any excess oil beyond 6.4 quarts (or 7 quarts if you use the M1-301 Mobil filter) from each oil change. Your dipstick "full" mark may not be accurate, it might be too much. The engine simply expels excess from the CCV. Yuck. This CCV spew is also why many "mechanics" take one look at the front of the turbo and instantly come to the wrong conclusion that the turbo is bad. |

My leak in that location is tranny fluid. Sir Sam has suggested most of the coolers built into the radiator leak at the fitting. |

so, got a chance to check that quick connect fitting on bottom of tranny cooler, and it is definitely leaking on both sides. the nut is very tight, so not leaking from being loose. i read that the spring clamp can go bad? did notice that the line on the drivers side seems much more loose. (the metal part of line can move up/down mabey 1/4 inch plus) also, because of the leak, there is oily residue over a good portion of the bottom of tranny cooler fins on both sides, and lots of gunk in fins everywhere. not sure where to go from here... can the tranny cooler be easily removed and sprayed out at carwash? and can one purchase new quick connect fittings? i looked in the KJ service manual and it looks like special tool 8875A is required to release quick connect. is this also easy to purchase, or is there a universal tool equivalent? thank you! |

Tranny cooler is the bottom 1/3. The top 2/3 is the air conditioning. So removing one requires removing both. Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk 2 |

rhljeep - just back from the UK after 20+ travel hours so I'm not up to a detailed response but IIRC there are "universal" tool equivalents although I also seem to recall the removal can be done without a tool and I also seem to recall that replacement fittings can be obtained but you will have to do a bit of a search on the LOST forum for details, you might try the CRD tech section. FYI any decent engine degreaser should do to loosen up that crud, just spray it in there, let sit, hose off with a garden hose. FYI also if the tranny cooler part of the AC condensor is leaking, not the fittings, the cheap fix is to install an auxillary tranny cooler and bypass the tranny cooler portion of the AC condensor entirely which is the same thing one does for a eaky tranny cooler located in the bottom of the regular radiator on other vehicles. |

thanks again. seems like it would be a good idea to clean up the area with the degreaser to get a better idea where the leak is? or how does one isolate bad fittings from bad tranny cooler - and hence the aux. cooler install? worth it, after it's clean to try some silicone to seal? (can't hurt) |
