Simple solution. Find a welder or exhaust shop who can do the work, the way the economy is, they will appreciate the work. Have them open up the flange on the rear of the CAT to a full 2 1/2". When I posted the test results a few years ago, members came up with a ot of ways to get the job done that all worked, pick one. Cut out the stock muffler with the restricted flow that was designed for a naturally aspirated gasser, not a turbo diesel. Obtain a 2 1/2" Magnaflow Stainless Steel muffler and some 2 1/2" 304 stainless steel straight pipe and have it welded together. Your done. If you buy the 2 1/2" CAT back system, you will gain little because of the 2 1/8" choke point on the rear CAT flange. With this mod the Acid Heads who run the Enviro Nazi Agencies can't go after you for doing an Aftermarket Exhaust System Fix. With some cops, a 3" exhaust system with a shiny pipe is radar bait, just like flames on the fenders and hood if your not selling fire suppression equipment with the Company Logo on the side too.
More Stainless Steel facts: The stock system is 304 Stainless Steel, that is why there is surface rust on the systems near ocean coastal areas and those who live in the salt belt where the Gooberments salt the road in the winter. Chlorides are what rusts 304 SS and salt is Sodium Chloride. So if you want it to shine like chrome, you better shell out for 316 SS. For the 2.8L CRD, the CAT is not a performance robbing device. You would do more for your performance and engine durability by installing an SEGR to keep the exhaust out of your intake.
