You need to read Sir Sam's NOOB guide and while there download the 05 and 06 FSMs (you need both as 05 lacks diesel cooling system section and diagnostics but does have illustration keys while the 06 is the reverse) and the 05 Parts Manual. These should answer your questions. FYI the FSMs torque values are horribly wrong in a couple of spots. I forget exactly where but the FSM posted torque value is so insanely high the error is relatively obvious. |

One of the spots with invalid torque values is for the bolts that hold the fan mount to the engine... there are 4-5 bolts that should be torqued to 35'ish pounds, and the manual lists 110 foot-points (or so). I caught that one when the bolts started stretching - a very distinctive feeling - and fortunately before they broke in the block. The other that may be off, though when I last checked it was correct in one place, was torque for the plugs that are removed to use the cam alignment pins. In general, just do a common-sense check before proceeding. THe SM has a section showing standard torque values based upon bolt size - that's a great cross-check. If the values listed in the various installation sections of the manual vary radically from the general values table, you should explore further before twisting.. Mark |

Starters are VERY simple devices. They are easy to clean & rebuild IF necessary. Besides doing it yourself, you could have a local starter / alternator shop go through yours for you. Especially on a diesel, they are rarely turned over much since our engines start so quickly. |
