Post subject:  Selling my 2005 Liberty CRD - Not running

Last summer my 2005 Liberty w/95,000mi decided to drop dead. :furious: I was driving home from work on a nice country road & suddenly horrible black smoke, loud tuh-tuh-tuh and a bad vibration. I ended up towing it home, then to a diesel mechanic here on LI (not a dealer, since they don't even know what they are here on Long Island, NY). It started, but same symptoms. Mechanic diagnosed bad fuel injectors & pulled them out. From there he did a compression check & found high in #1, normal in 2, 3 & 4. He said it was most likely a blown valve/piston. I looked into a rebuild, but no one would touch it. I've looked into new & used engines, but at this point it's too much for me to do myself. My wife convinced me to hold onto it, hoping we would stumble upon some kind of deal on an engine, but at this point I think I'm done with it. So now it's going up for sale, as-is. I don't have the time, energy, space to part it out. It has been in the garage since July 2011. It kills me that I paid $21,000 for it in late 2007 and only got 3 1/2 years out of it. I'd like to get $4500, but I'm also realistic. Anyone total their truck lately? Great truck if you could just switch over your running engine!!

2005 Jeep Liberty Sport CRD
95k on blown-not running engine - Samco hoses (on engine 6 mos)
10K on tires
Beryl Green exterior, grey cloth interior
Electric sun/moon roof - works, no leaks
Body in great shape, maybe some light scratches here & there
See pics at http://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/3289006334.html

This is a great forum. I learned a lot about this truck & got lots of advice. Guess I should have gotten that warranty too :(

$10 says you have exactly the same thing that just killed my first and SECOND engine - bottom end failure of one of the rods. I don't know what caused the second failure, but the first one happened (I'm fairly certain) because the turbo failed and the oil pressure went to the leak instead of to the TINY passages in the rod bearings. This kind of failure can happen in seconds after a turbo failure.

The noise you describe sounds similar to what my second engine started doing WITHOUT any kind of oil pressure loss, check the video I posted in the "tapping on top end" thread to see it. If that is what your engine sounded like... Your bottom end is gone too, but maybe can still be fixed because the engine hasn't ventilated itself. Don't start it up to check, mine killed itself at idle.

I would love the project but training pay has made money tight. Hope I will get another opportunity.

Funny, I just saw this post, but saw the CL ad before seeing the post. I have been emailing back and forth about it, and am interested. Could use another project...

Hi Mike! I'd really like to see this truck go to someone who can get her going again. I can't afford to put more time into troubleshooting & hoping it's an easy fix.

I'm selling the truck whole. I am no longer trying to troubleshoot the problem. If someone finds it was an easy fix, that's their gain. I'll just be happy if she's brought back to life for someone. Sorry, I don't want to start pulling off parts here and there. There are pics at: http://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/3289006334.html

VERY similar event happened when my timing jumped on my CRD when the water pump shaft broke on the Crown pump. Although mine never started after the failure because the timing pulley on the water pump was completely bent over. You won't know for sure on yours until you pull off the intake to check, but very likely it is your timing belt slipped from wear, and you will need to replace all the rockers/lifters w/ new gaskets/timing belt/pulleys, water pump optional. If you do the job yourself it will cost about $800 - $1,200 depending on where you source the parts from and what you end up needing to replace.
Just keep in mind that most diesel mechanics have no idea how this engine is set up and won't take the time to do a proper diagnostic/teardown. Heck, it may be that only a couple rockers failed and your timing is still fine. I wouldn't mind picking it up to resell, but not going to drive that far on a guess.

I wish you were closer. My spare engine would go nicely in there. I think my transportation costs would just be too much.

I'm a little alarmed at all the CRDs dropping dead these days. Do these engines have a bottom end oiling issue?

Hope so. Guy was local & seemed really interested in re-doing it. Told him about this site for his reference.

To everyone - I got $2500 cash & the guy took it away immediately. He's called a few times & is in the proces of taking it apart. Please don't tell me all about how you would have paid me more. He was the only one who wanted to come look at it so maybe he got a 'deal'.

Thanks for all the help with the truck. I did get a lot of info here while she was running.

Well, now the garage is clear to start working on that '74 FJ40 that's been waiting for me... :JEEPIN:

I got 190,000 plus on my 2005 crd. EGR is driving me nuts and I had to replace the turbo at around 170,000. Then learned the hard way not to let the oil drop too low on the dipstick. New turbo at 185,000.Ouch!
Changed timing belt at 160,000 and did a rear end repair at 130,000. I need front end bushings and my rear power window just dropped into the door. Other than that I have no problems. OH! changed out the fuel lift /heater/filter head because of leaky heater plug too.
Seeing some posts about lubrication problems causing serious faliures. Am I close to the life expectancey here? I dont do any of the heavy work myself and I woulld rather trade to lower milage anything than deal with major engine stuff.
