Post subject:  Odd electrical/engine problem

I have an 06 CRD with an odd problem. The slick road light, ABS and ESP BAS all come on at the same time which disables the cruise. When these lights go off periodically, the engine starts lurching at any even speeds, but if you step on the pedal, it accelerates well, but goes back to lurching at an even speed.
I'm at a bit of a lose. It does have an after market chip, but I don't currently know what it is. Could that cause this problem?

Thanks!
Ken

I'm not fond of "chips" if by that you mean one of the cheater chips that's "supposed" to improve power and/or mpg. If you really want to do that get an ECU tune from GDE and do the job properly. Whether or not the chip is part of the problem I don't know.

Flacky performance of the ESP and ABS system especially with intermittent odometer not working sounds like one or more bad wheel speed sensors (1 on each wheel on the 06) or possible a bad hub. Lots of chat about this on the forum. Sensors are apparently not too expensive and relatively easy to change unless stuck.

What papaindigo said.

You could try disconnect your chip...if it is a cheater chip....and see if that corrects the problem. :?

I'm new to this CRD, about a week now and I would like to know what you mean by "get an ECU tune from GDE"

I have all sorts of dumb questions, but I will start with this one. Thanks!

There are no dumb questions to speak of for new owners short of can I use gas in my diesel. Best place to go for answers to lots of questions is Sir Sam's NOOB guide toward the top of this page (he keeps most updates upfront by editing page 1) and for the ECU tune by GDE see http://www.greendieselengineering.com/g ... ethod=home

Engine chip's have a tendency to cause no CEL, limp mode issues - especially if there's any fuel filter issues.

the'ABS and ESP BAS' - tend to be wheel sensor issues as papa mentioned.

also on 06's there Fuel filter head was repositioned and it bumps into a wiring harness -
some folks have had damaged wires and all sorts of problems from that.

Wiring harness was an issue for me and caused these lights to come up, with cluster going out and also limp mode at times... As ATXKJ pointed out, the wiring around the fuel filter head is known for chaffing against it. Also take time to ensure ECM connector is well inserted and if willing, check & see if water could drip inside the engine compartment around that area. I found out I had a problem when my Jeep pulled the "X-mas cluster & drop dead" number on me one morning, right after I finished spraying it at the car wash, using the water pressure gun. Lifting the hood, I saw water dripping right on top of wiring and ECM on left side next to windshield. Worth checking out, just in case...

Thanks for the info, but would that account for when the warning lights go out, the engine starts running poorly? Thanks
