I'd love to get a read on the vin of the car I'm looking at purchasing... But it seems CF has decided that their moderately-accurate service is now worth twice what they charged the last time I used it. Yeeouch!

wvwsp61j53w493318 is the vin, thanks!

You may snort, but I am neither in love nor proficient at rowing my own gears. As an added bonus, I am familiar with these, and know their behavior. Fairly simple design. Oh yea: I had the sedan version and had more cosmetic than mechanical issues over 150k of NOT having the engine fail on me.

I need a car, not a hobby.

Copy cat! We're in negotiations to buy an '05 auto ourselves. Whether its a trade strait across, o'er I buy it outright for $10k after I sell the CRD.

I think I want one now too. I've spent $3000 on my CRD in the last two months and I still have a grind/vibration coming from something. Then two days ago I had three lights randomly pop up on my dash. The water in fuel light, the battery light and something to the left that went out before I could figure it out.

Those little diesel VWs are looking pretty good. I am also thinking about a 2010-12 Subaru Outback.

Thats OK, thanks - I just manned up and paid for the single report. Not all the information the seller has told me jives with the report, but nothing terrible appeared. I'm glad I did it, I might have a bit more ability to beat him up on the price now. There also is still no record of a timing belt being done anytime soon, so I think I will be doing that PDQ if I buy it.

An interesting thing that the seller said in passing on the phone is that he "did a repo" on another vehicle recently, and his wife might drive that. Sounds like he is possibly curbstoning the cars instead of saying he maybe is a dealer. I'm going to see the thing on Tuesday, so we shall see.

My wife has a 12 outback, though it is at the dealer now, and has been for 2-1/2 weeks, with a blown engine. Other than that, she loves it! We traded in the 06 CRD, which I later bought back for my own use, on the 12 outback. We had an 05 TDI wagon that we bought new, but traded it a couple of years ago. I miss it and the MPG. I was thinking of getting another so I don't beat the CRD up as much. I have been putting 600-1000 miles a week on the CRD lately for work.

Look at the 2002-2003 years, they have a better engine than the PD in the 04-06, no problems with cam failure, magic oil, or fuel pump problems. Some of the newest ones STILL are having those same issues, and now they also toss in potential CR high pressure fuel pump failures. Yay!

That one you just sent me, I'm not going to go for that one I don't think, so it's all yours if you want it. I can suggest a few small mods that would easily fix the EGR and a couple power mods... Should be a solid vehicle for 300k plus.

Thing is, we gotta have an auto........and with the universally despised/hated 01M having too many horror stories in the '03 and older ones, don't want to chance it. Cam wear seems a hit or miss thing on the PD pump engines and the BEW code ones of 2004-2005 seem less prone to premature failure that the 2005.5+ which had higher injector pressures. Most seem traced to a bad batch early on and if the engine makes it past 75k or so with no signs of wear, it'll probably last forever. And if not, a cam change its far easier/cheaper than a tranny any day!!!!!

Post subject:  Re: Anyone have access to a Carfax account?

The failures of the 01M transmission are FAR overblown, and very predictable - If you believe VW with their "lifetime" transmission fluid and never change it, it WILL begin to fail in short order. Usually just after the "lifetime" of the warranty. The failure mode is also predictable, it starts by being slow to engage reverse and drive. Why? Because the valve body is weakened (possibly from overheated old fluid) and develops cracks around the solenoids. The pressure leaks back to the pan, and the torque converter and clutches suffer, eventually failing completely.

Replacement of the valve body is a $300 job, and on my first Jetta, I went 150k without any problems in the transmission. Why? I didn't let the transmission fluid run in there more than 50k miles. I strongly suspect the people that have had failures have never done anything to or with their transmissions.
