First of all, thanks for all the help! As the new owner of a used '06 CRD with 70,000 miles I feel much more comfortable as I find more 'quirks' with this wonderful piece of engineering! ( window controllers, thermostats, oil drain plugs, map sensors, etc ) I've completed the ORM and EHM with good results and I'm getting ready to replace the thermostat with the inline idea. Now I have a couple more questions. 1. GDE eco tune or Samco hoses first? (can't afford to do both right now, hoses seem okay, I'll be checking them closer during thermostat work) 2. In the owner's manual it talks about checking/cleaning boost pressure solenoid filter. Nothing about it in the owner's manual, and no info on diesel engine in the Chilton book for Liberty's...is there something on here dealing with this? |

Welcome aboard and if you have not already done so read Sir Sam's NOOB guide and while there download copies of BOTH the 05 and 06 FSMs (the 05 lacks cooling data and diagnostics but has illustration keys while the 06 is the reverse). As to your questions: 1. pull both intercooler hoses off the engine; remove the woven covering if there; inspect for holes/tears and "consistency" of the hoses; if any holes/tears are found or if the hose(s) is "mushy" they need replacing. While hoses are off take a careful look at the bottom of the airbox to turbo hose to see if it's torn just in front of where it attaches to the turbo; that area tend to get oil soaked from CCV flow. If the intercooler hoses are ok and feel solid and the airbox to turbo hose is ok then I'd go for the GDE tune first as the intercooler hoses last until they go at which point the power loss is obvious. 2. look immediately behind the air filter box and you will see a black sort of tower looking thing with a lot of vacuum hoses plugged into it. On the passenger fender side (left hand drive models) you will see a plastic filter, looks much like a small lawn mower gas line filter, with one end plugged into a rubber intake line and the other end open. If it looks clean forget about it, if it looks dirty replace. Costs like $5 at dealer or I imagine you could use a similar cheap gas filter if you modified the "intake" end. |

Thanks for the info! I'm trying to see if a Gates 33109 thermostat will work right now, but it seems to be a perfect fit into the radiator hose without the flange. I'm afraid of trying to force this thing in there since it looks like the Stant flange is not nearly as pronounced. |

I wouldn't put and inline thermostat in the CRD I would just replace it with the stock or one of the machined version which I don't know if the dude is back making yet. |

Thanks for the advice everyone. I managed to get the thermostat changed and the air hoses checked this weekend. Both the airbox to turbo inlet and the turbo to intercooler hoses look very good, with no cracks or soft spots, and hardly any sign of oily residue. I went with the Stant inline fix for now (since it was starting to get cooler here) but I will probably replace with new OEM next spring. However, it did get into the upper 80's here today and everything stayed right where it should from idle to 80 mph. PS - I'm used to seeing my Dodge PU glow plugs start coming on at this time of the year, but I haven't seen the CRD use them at all even though it's been in the 40's; does that seem consistent with other people's experience? |

If you blink you'll miss seeing the light. They are ceramic and Chrysler was having problems with them burning out and reduced the glow time dramatically. Another case where they fixed a hardware item with a software solution
