So, I am looking at the block I have, and looking at the the CRD high pressure pump, and looking at the index marks which seem to be completelt redundant, and I am thinking:

"LMW, it looks as though this engine is the descendant of a mechanically injected motor."

Which thought was then followed by,
"LMW, if you had the right sized mechanical injection pump, you could replace those high dollar injectors with Bosch VW injectors and have a mechanically injected 2.8 litre TDI jeep."

Then I thought,
"But what about the computer? The turbo is pneumatic, and the engine would be mechanically controlled (injection advance via pneumatics and rpm), and if I installed a manual transmission from a Dodge 2500 the only thing I would need is glow plugs, and those I could do with a pushbutton. Overboost might be an issue, but a waste gate could handle that.....Hmmm. A totally non electronic modern diesel Jeep. No computer needed. Hmmm. "

So, is this doable?

Not if you have any type of inspections/emissions.Plus you'd loose a ton of power trying to spin a NV5600,even if you could get the 2.8 and that trans to even mate let alone find a clutch that would work.

Sounds like you're describing this

https://www.google.com/search?q=2.8+pow ... 66&bih=635

And yes, this 2.8 uses a VGT !!
