Wife was on her way to a funeral sat and called me from central ut. Said it sounded like she blew another boost hose. She was about 1/2 way between santaquin and nephi. Told her to limp it to nephi about 10-15 miles. About 5 miles later crackle pop pop and a big cloud of smoke from exhaust. Had her check for puddles of oil or antifreeze-nothing. Had it towed to nephi. Mechanic pulled intake off and turbo was loose. Started jeep and engine sounded ok but pumped a bunch of oil out. Intake hose had 4 holes under the clamp where it connects to turbo. We had been noticing more turbo whistle over the last 6 months but wasn't able to pin point it. Checked intake side of turbo a couple of months ago and shaft was tight. What might have caused this?

The area of the airbox to turbo hose just in front of the turbo is a known failure point (oil pooling there from CCV) and should be checked for any sign of weakness IMHO ever 25k miles or so if not sooner as you can ingest unfiltered air thru tears at that location directly into the turbo with obvious potentially bad results. ID Parts has a decent price on a new turbo but that hose is DCJ only as far as I know but should be obtainable for like $60 (when installing be sure airbox end is snugged upto MAF sensor before tightening clamp lest you crush airbox outlet) |

it did have 3-4 holes roughly 6mm dia each directly under the clamp which I dont remember seeing when I inspected the turbo for play a couple of months ago. Although they werent obvious until you flexed the hose so I may have missed them. Father-in-law is a body shop mgr @ a jeep dealership so the turbo will cost about $1200. Wish I could afford the GDE turbo kit. Still trying to get the eco tune but finances havent cooperated. This forum has saved me so much $$$ over the years because of everyone's knowledge and willingness to share with the rest of us diesel lovers out there. Thanks everybody. Hopefully them starting it for those several seconds didnt cause any more damage. |

If a person were to blow a turbo, would it not be a good idea to look at the one offered from GDE? Seems like a great way to improve performance while replacing the turbo... |

If you mean the one offered by GDE, it is an option. I had an email discussion with Keith about it, and he recommended that I went with the stock. The GDE is offered as a performance upgrade. It is pricier 2500 vs 1120. Then there is the fabrication for the exhaust. Rewiring for the new actuator. The kid in me wanted the GDE, but in reality, for me, this is the better way to go. The money I saved will go towards my Torque Converter... Actually right now, my glow plug repair bill. |

I too will probably need a TQ in the near future. Which ones have you found to fill the need? |

Got the jeep back, what a difference a shiny new turbo makes-pulls off the line a lot faster and seems so quiet. Father-in-law picked it up from the dealer and drove it 50-60 miles and was impressed with how peppy it was. Smoked like crazy for the first 20-30 miles so he got some dirty looks from people but after that he liked it. Geordi had me afraid it was going to throw a rod because of the minute or two they had run the engine but after the 250 mi trip home from the in-laws it runs and sounds perfect.

I'm glad to hear that it wasn't damaged by the mechanic starting it with a blown turbo! Contrary to impressions, I did like my CRD when it was running, and I'm happy for anyone else's that is also behaving. In my case, the times when it was working tended to be overshadowed by the times when it ate something expensive. |
