I have read is the glow plug on cyl #2. Now if I have to order from Italy and it takes about 10 days to get here, how long can I drive the car with this code? By the time they get here I will have driven over 1500 miles, would that be ok?

I had glow plug codes since i got it. My #1 and #2 were broken. 1,2,3 came out easily. #4 snapped and now my head is being removed.

Change them with stainless asap. My diesel mechanic is worried what happened to the broken pieces.

Remove the #2 glow plug and have a look at it to see if it is liable to break apart...maybe swap it with another plug to see if it is faulty but only if no obvious damage is present.

If the plug looks bad it would be best not to continue driving with it.

Per GDE P1263 is indeed Glow plug #2. They can fail with/without a broken tip. The check for the basic failure mode can be done with a volt/ohm meter although I'm not sure I'd bother taking the trouble as failure is not uncommon, the fault code is usually correct, and DIY replacement is neither hard nor all that expensive. This check does not tell you if the plug tip is broken; only removal will do that. If the tip is broken it either causes relatively obvious cylinder/valve damage or passes out of the system causing no damage. If upon removal you find a broken tip FYI a "sooty" broken surface indicates an old break and you can assume the broken piece passed thru the system with no problem but a "shiney" surface indicates a new break so the part may still be inside the engine (right now I have no suggestion on how to procede from there). If in doubt of sooty vs. shiney break another plug tip to compare.

Removal/replacement instructions are at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=56696&p=630729&hilit=glow+removal#p630729 . FYI be moderately cautious of the ceramic tips to not break on removal but they are not exceptionally fragile.

As to driving with the code. You are probably ok to do so if necessary but avoiding doing so or doing so as little as possible is a good idea especially if the code just now popped up.

When you do remove them, soak them in penetrating oil. If they seem too tight, let a mechanic do it.

I lost number 1 during the voltage transition period and the switch to stainless. IMHO if you have a tip that breaks off and causes damage you would have already been screwed like Papaindigo indicated. That said, it is not something to pretend it didn't happen.

While I was rating for all of my new parts to go from ceramic to stainless (plugs, wire holder, voltage regulator of some sort) and the ECM red flash plus GDE's re-flash; number two went out. This is whenI noticed a difference. It ran rougher until it warmed.

I think you're doing the right thing unless you're one heck of a bicyclist.
Good luck

My first failure was dealt with by the dealer under warranty. They didn't have the part in stock and told me it was no problem to drive around in this state. Of course I didn't care because they would be picking up the tab for any collateral damage.

Keith at GDE has since indicated to get them out as soon as they fail. This would be my tendency.

I wouldn't even consider removing to inspect or swap. Don't remove it unless you've got a replacement at hand or don't need the vehicle until the replacement arrives.

Try a small thin walled plastic tube with one end in a shop vac. GP hole is small; injector hole is slightly bigger. Have pulled various bits out of various tight places with that. Move gently and slowly. Critical time is when you have the end near the hole through which the tube goes. If you have a fiber optic camera you can go looking for it first.....

I had an original glow plug failure. I replaced it and three good ceramic plugs with a 7 volt set from Italy. You can have my three good ceramic ones if you want them. Just pay pal me postage. About $8 to anywhere in U.S. :5SHOTS:

Not to hijack this thread, but how does one get a listing of the different codes and what they mean?

If you have it in there for an extended period, gunk may build up around it so that you will need to turn and pull at the same time. Number 1 did this to me when I was swapping them out. It caused a tense moment 'cuz I though it may be stripped out. Good luck,

Thank you all for the replies and links !!!

I think I will replace with the 5volt metallic ones, the issue I have is trying to find the correct part number for them, I understand the original Bosh 80041 was discontinued, is the new metallic upgrade still the same part number? does anybody know the part number for the 5 volt metallic glow plug?

I see them on e-bay but there are so many different ones is confusing...

If you get the 5V ones - you have to have the dealer reflash the controller
if you get the European 7V ones - you don't need a reflash.

Siardi - obviously it's your choice but IMHO your better off with the imported 7v drop in metal replacements which run about $180. If you go with the DCJ 5v replacements the kit (PN 68090434AA) with 4 plugs and a new controller is going to run you about $145 with shipping plus probably $100 for a dealer ECU reflash ($50 for a GDE reflash). The ECU reflash must be done before hooking up the 5v glow plugs or they will be burned out by the higher voltage.

this is so confusing.

I have 5v GP's now, if I replace with 5v I need a re-flash, but if i go with 7v I don't? that does not make sense to me....

Also what about the controller if I go with 7v.? can I keep the same that's in there now?

I'm getting the flash from Keith.

What if want to just replace the one that's bad??

For the Canadians needing glow plugs, I just picked up a set of 4 7 volt metal drop ins for $148.00 including shipping and the governments bite at

Stock - came with 7V ceramics
after lots of fails - Jeep came up with a 5V metallic that requires a reflash
about the same time - a European company came out with a 7V metallic that does not require a reflash

if you have 5V now - then you already have the upgraded Jeep parts - and you're the first person to kill a metallic glow plug...

You got me excited for a moment. It's not clear who the manufacturer of these is and it looks like they're $125 each ($500 for a set of 4). Have they been delivered? If not you may be in for a shock when a single glow plug arrives!

Ahh, yes, the owner of this website was the guy that was trying to sell his CRD for $24000 a few months ago. He was the only owner in Canada that had his timing belt done properly because he was the only person that had the correct tools to do it  Avast is telling me this site contains a Trojan and is blocking it.

Anyway, here are a few more gems from his website :-)r :
Samco CAC hoses $475
Timing belt tensioner $190
Timing belt idler $100
Gates timing belt $200
Serpentine belt tensioner $200
Serpentine belt idler $100
Serpentine belt $85

that makes a lot more sense. I thought the original were 5 volts, that's where I was confused.
Thank you very much for clarifying that.

I'm going to order a set of the 7Volt metallic and replace just the damaged one. And I do not need a reflash if I do that, correct? Can you please confirm this for me.
I need to order ASAP, I already drove over 1000 miles since the code popped up and I don't fell comfortable till I resolve this issue. Thank you very much for your help.
