| Post subject: | Hits 65,000 miles, Electrical Poltergeist, Is this planned? |
See my other posts for the war that I just went through to get the Jeep running again. This week, I replaced the glow plugs with the 7v steel drop in replacements. For the first time in awhile the CEL was off. The Jeep was running great. Tonight, and I sh*t you not, the Jeep hit the 65,000 mile mark and the entire dashboard lit up. Every warning light went on. Some blinked on and off. This happened one block from my house. By the time I parked it, even the passenger air bag indicator light, by the glove box was blinking. The headlights dimmed permanently during my shut down procedure, and while I was in shut down procedure, the Jeep shut itself off. Is this just me? Did Chysler plan this sh*t? As I have stated before, as soon as I reached the limit of my warranty, 52,000 miles, my CEL went on. And now, I hit 65,000 exactly and the dash goes Poltergeist. Did I accidentally receive the 5v replacement plugs, installed them without the flash upgrade, and just paid a price for it? Any thoughts? Again, beyond words. ~M~

in general - they tend to restart like nothing happened......... if you had 5V plugs they would have blown on engine startup leaving you with GlowPlug CEL's However on an 06 -they moved a wiring bundle to make room for the ESC pump - near the fuel head - check to see if a wire got cut/shorted while doing the glow plug work |

IIRC this can be a one time event that disappears on restart. Beyond that: 1. X2 on checking the wire bundle behind the fuel filter head on an 06 2. check all the wiring connections you may have joggled when doing the glow plug install 3. what's the age/condition of your battery. Today's vehicle computers really don't like even the slightest drop in battery voltage. 4. did you "wash" your engine to degrease it before doing the glow plug install? Is so unplug, dry out, replug all the electrical connections you can including the ECU. |

Went out to the jeep this morning. Same stuff. I didn't see any cuts or crimps in any wires in that bundle. My tester and all of my tools are over at my job site, so I am going to have to hold off until tomorrow to test for a short. I pulled codes, just for the record: P0616 - STARTER RELAY CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND. P0560-ECM VOLTAGE TOO LOW P0670-GLOW PLUG CONTROLLER CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION U0146 - ? U0121-LOST COMMUNICATION WITH ANTI-LOCK BRAKE MODULE P2264-WATER IN FUEL VOLTAGE BELOW LOWER LIMIT So, probably something that my mechanics did when they were installing plugs this week. If this is on them, is there any way to get the Jeep to start to get it over there? Battery is run down. Tow it? ~M~ |

I looked at every wiring harness or bunch that I could. Everything seems snug, with no cuts. No engine washing has occurred. ~M~ |

U0146–LOST COMMUNICATION WITH CENTRAL GATEWAY So much for my quicky basic ideas but my underlying opinion remains the same. Based on your initial description and all these codes you have a wiring and/or ground problem somewhere, not that I can be much help on where. You might consider disconnecting the battery and putting a charger on it and while the battery is chargeing unplug the 2 wire bundle connectors that go to the ECU; check for any obvious problem; reconnect those 2 wire bundles; and once the battery is charged up clean the terminals/look for a loose ground wire/reconnect the battery and try to start. If no go I've exceeded my "expertise" so unless someone has a better idea tow to shop, hopefully one that knows modern vehicle electrical systems. I'd also suggest taking a look at the diagnostics for those codes for a common thread. If you have not already done so download a copy of the 06 FSM from Sir Sam's NOOB site as that copy of the FSM has to diagnostic codes and procedures. |

Here are my thoughts. 1. What type of battery did you install was it a 800cca? 2. Disconnect battery, allow ECM to reset. 3. Fully charge Battery while disconnected. 4. Test and reinstall. If your battery was unknowingly left to drain during the GP replacement, it may have never fully recuperated and batteries have been known to fail. |

Or water around the ECU connectors may have damaged the ECU. Are you sure you had a very good look at the cables there? |

Battery is currently charging (dirrp!). Battery is an 800cc Interstate Mega-Mega-Super-Super. Will update. |

Yeah...make sure you really check around the Driver side area for wiring damage, because all these systems are in the same vicinity. |

Battery was charged yesterday. Let it sit. Tested this morning, was holding max charge. Put it in the Jeep. Jeep fired right up, no problems. Shut it down, tested battery again. Full charge. Started it again, ran it around the block, no problems. I'm going to run with this Interstate 800cca, if I have another problem, Im kicking it to the curb, and getting a deep cycle. Will update this thread. Thanks for everyone's input. By the way, I checked and checked and checked those wire bundles. I didnt see anything. A little weird though, right? Right at 65,000 miles...I mean, it turns 65,000, I go "hey cool, 65,000", and the Jeep freaks out. ~M~ |

Wait, not so fast. Day after successful test, I took the Jeep to work. On the way, same sequence happened. Battery light first, then all of the other lights came on. Slow loss of power. Was at a light, turning Jeep around, Jeep shuts itself off. Was 1 mile from my mechanics place. Towed it. Electrical system tested. It's the Alternator. It's fried. New one going on tomorrow. It's me, right? I think my chi is just too powerful, and its pushing every part in the Jeep to destruction.

Check that the large cable going from the alternator to the battery is not chafing somewhere to ground. There is a fusable link in this cable but that is right at the battery...I have seen reports of this cable rubbing on a metal bracket. |

darn, these things are sensitive on the electrical systems. I miss my old 7.3 IDI. As long as there is power to the fuel solenoid, it ran. |

I currently have a 7.3l Powerstroke in my box truck with 335,000 miles on it. As long as both batteries are topped, as soon as I turn the key, WHAM, start-o. |
