I have had the Green Diesel tune for quite a while and despite occasional 10,000 mile oil changes, have been pretty good about the oil and filter changes.
At 130,ooo miles, starting to wonder if this motor is good to go to Arizona again this winter towing a trailer.
Here is the question, how do I know when it is time to pull the valve covers and have a look???
Fuel mileage is good, pulls good, no unusual engine noises, gosh I really like this diesel.

Looking at your signature line details of your rig I'd be suggesting that maybe an EGT gauge would be a good idea, as I find it very useful both in terms of fuel economy and in keeping an eye on temperature creep (where you unintentionally raise the operating temp through using more right foot than needed). I'll assume you have changed the timing belt. I would not pull the cover unless there was some reason for it. We still don't have a definitive answer on what is happening with rocker wear in this engine, but I think GDE is looking at it. Why not just give Keith a ring and get his opinion. If your doing the right things, like turning off EGR, regular oil changes, etc then it should run just fine for a long time; the question would be was there any damage done prior to turning off EGR etc.

At 130K I assume the TB job has been done.

Yes, timing belt done @ 100kmiles.
Running good.
Probably should test oil.

GDE had given a rough guideline that the MAF should read around 130 to 150 lbs/hr at idle. If you have a code reader that gives live data you'll at least have some indication of the condition of the rockers without opening it up.

I agree with the other posted that as long as you keep doing all the correct maintenance and oil changes, you should have no problems.

What oil do you use?

As far as taking off the intake? If you still have it at 200k. I would plan on several preventive things if you want it to run at top form:

1. Everything Timing.
2. Water pump.
3. Pull intake, clean.
4. Replace all lifters & rockers. (Rocker pins are going to be worn)
5. Test and replace the injectors as needed.
6. Check the turbo & send to repair shop as needed.

At least that's my plan, for now!

Good luck & Merry Christmas!

Thanks guys, good stuff.
Looking for a 5.9 Cummings/Dodge but going to try to get every bit out of this sweet rig.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

It would be cheaper to replace the Jeep as to replace the Injectors.

Unless you know how to rebuild them...

IDParts sells Remanufactured injectors for $579....

Rediculous.

As I understand it a good Bosch injector shop can rebuild injectors but I don't know for how much

Wahrend ich gut Deutsch sprechen kann, weiss ich nicht von jedem Bosch-Geschafte in den Vereinigten Staaten.

(Basically, even though I speak good german, I don't know any US Bosch shops.)

Heh.

My rockers ( some of them) were worn to the point of replacement by 90,000 miles. I have no idea what the PO PM schedule was, but I plan to check/replace rockers every 100k miles.

Yes...injectors are quite $$$$ but when you have them out. A quick shop visit is allways good to do. They test, clean and yes can rebuild if needed.

To keep these CRD's in top running condition good injectors are near the top of the list.

Kdlewis,
This sounds like a good check. Gonna find out.
Just got 22.5mpg around town in cold Maine weather, so the injectors are not a real worry.
Although i do some2stroke oil and cetain booster in.
