Please review my part #s and thoughts

T336 - Gates TB from amazon
K061130 - serpentine belt from Amazon
5142798AA - Tensioner
5142573AA - Idlers x 2
5142985AA - Water Pump

Things I am questionable on:

Folks have said no need for timing cover gasket
No need for water pump O - ring or gasket as I have read you can seperate the halves and mount up the front half to the old half left mounted to the block.
No thermostat as mine has died and running with an inline.

Thoughts? Anything I'm missing? What about the serpentine pulleys / tensioner. Should those be changed at this point?

Thanks,

Paul

Timing belt cover gasket is not needed even if your old one dies. At best it's poor dust seal. WP; see Sir Sam's split in 2 install.

Serp belt idlers; inspect for tight bearings and no leaking grease. A bit of caked on dust that brushes off easily without being "greasy" is normal. Essentially the same for the serp belt tensioner. If solid they don't "need" to be replaced. Bearings unfortunately or fortunately run until they die which may be soon or way long.

What about new thermostat?

New tstat as a "routine" part of a TB job is in my opinion is a waste of money. If your temp gauge is slightly left of vertical after full warm up then the tstat is working just fine and does not need replacement. If your temp gauge does not reach that postion then the tsat needs attention.

Either way replacement of a tstat does not involve TB related items. Just undo the tstat hoses; unclip the wiring to the temp sender on the back of the tstat; undo 4 tstat bolts; remove tsat and clean off old gasket and move temp sender to new tstat; reinstall is the reverse plus replace maybe a pint of lost coolant.

Hi Paul,

I would guess that this is the first T- belt change for this engine? Prior to 100k?

The Water Pump? From what i have seen and read most people have had more problems after installing a new water pump. Due Leaks, Incorrect install or using the non OEM crown water pump.

The water pump in the CRD is a good one and will last well over 200k with good fluid use. Water pumps will start to leak prior to failure. Parts Co's push water pumps as part of the t-belt change to make more $$. Save your money. The t-belt labor will be 1/2 the time.

I would suggest not changing the water pump untill the 2nd belt change.

While you are in there check or replace your Mechanical fan Clutch, and take a good look at your transmission cooler lines they are prone to leak at the so call quick connects. The fan clutch must be removed anyway so its a perfect time. The TB job doesn't help the cooler lines a whole lot except in visibility so just take a good look around.

I didn't change the water pump, wasn't leaking and bearing was tight. I would wait unless you see it weeping or bearing feels sloppy when you remove the belt.

Good luck..
