Post subject:  looking at buying crd

I am looking at a 2006 liberty crd at a jeep dealer that has 120000 miles on it that i am thinking of buying. Maybe you can answer some questions for me.
What should I look for and watch out for before I buy it?
Looking at using it to tow boat 2500 to 3000 lbs, what kind of fuel economy do these crd's get towing?
If everything looks god and I get it are segr kits available?
I have a full well equipped shop and a lot of experience and training in mechanics and electronics ,Lots of experience with 2 and 4 stroke gas engines but zip with diesels.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hmmm,
Timing belt/water pump-full job to include tensioners and rollers should have been replaced at 100k. If TB wasn't replaced, RUN RUN RUN. I don't trust a dealership to be honest about the TB change.

Check airfilter, they clog quickly and its condition will give you an idea if vehicle was maintained properly.

Glow plugs: Try to get a start below freezing and see how it does. Ask if glow plugs are original ceramics or 7v steel or 5v steel.

Maintenance history: if torque converter hasn't been replaced, you'll experience a failure...almost everyone does.

Turbocharger shaft play...check it before you buy.

Check dipstick to ensure oil isn't frothy.

Coolant should be orange/pink....check coolant tank for sediment.

Temperature guage when fully warmed up should be one needle width shy of half-way make on temp guage. Thermostats fail regularly open meaning engine runs cold.

LASTLY BUT VERY IMPORTANT; NEVER PAY FULL PRICE FROM A DEALER!
When you trade in a diesel to a dealership, they will say diesel's aren't in demand because fuel costs 50-60 cents per gallon.

When a dealership sells a diesel, particularly a Liberty, all you will hear is how rare diesels are! Don't budge and your offer should be 1000-1500 below asking price. If dealer doesn't accept, WALK!

Check coolant to ensure no oil in it and no bubbling when engine is running.

Upgraded fuel head is a must and a lift pump on vehicle (either inline or in tank will tell you it was maintained/run by an educated CRD driver

What I'd do? I'd pass from a dealer and buy only from a private party who has proof of maintenance and used something other than 0w40 and can speak diesel. if you can get a VIN and a forum user can give you maintenance history, it'd be worth a look.

Pull codes in case check engine light was disabled.

On test drive, once engine is warmed up, apply full accelerator pedal from a stop and see how tranny shifts and engine performs. take it all the way up to 65mph or so with it fully depressed. A little black smoke from exhaust is normal but continuous black or blue smoke is not desireable. 0-60 should take 12 seconds or so on a stock engine.

Could not have said it better Drewd.

Only thing i could add is:

Proir to starting turn the key to run and make sure all the warning lights work. Glow plug & Check engine light for sure.

Good luck

I agree I don't like purchasing a Liberty CRD from a dealer, a lot of times they were traded because they wernt taken care of and have problems. Dealers really don't care about the Timing Belt job or anything else for that matter.

At the very least if you do want to deal with the dealer have them pull a complete service history from Chrysler database. At least then you will know if recalls and what warranty work has been done.
