I had my timing belt, idler pulleys, TB tensioner, water pump, serpentine belt, fan clutch, 11 blade nylon fan, and coolant changed today. 99,600 miles on the clock. I was able to source the parts and pay the shop for labor and coolant only. The shop I was fortunate enough to use was Diesel Injection Service, aka Total Diesel Care, near Madison WI about an hour and 20 minutes from home. I worked with a service writer named Nick, and had this scheduled about 2 months ago. I have to say that this shop is VERY impressive. Clean, professional, and prompt to say the least. They also have serviced a fair number of these. They had a couple for sales personnel. I found no private shops around home work on them. Mine isn't gonna be anyone's guinea pig. I dropped the CRD off at 7:30, by 9:30 I was able to go into the service bay to talk to the mechanic. I was given the info that my turbo was in great shape. No side side or end play. Good news to be sure. By 4:30 It was done, test driven, and paid for.I was informed that none of the parts were showing any signs of imminent failure. Cost for labor and coolant $600 + $580 for the parts kit from ID Parts, $53 for new fan clutch, and $62 for 11 blade nylon fan for a total of $1295. It is a fair price, so I'm happy. The local $tealship quoted $2200. I would not hesitate to use this shop again. My experience could not have been better. http://disnet.com/ or http://dieselforward.com/

Well, the wife and I just got home a little while ago. We took this opportunity to go an hour+ away from home for this to pawn the kids off for an overnight with the in-laws, So, I just now had the chance to look at the old parts that were replaced. The timing belt is getting hard, but not quite to the point of cracking. However, I could see just the beginnings of age or stress crackling across the smooth side of the belt, but nothing torn or chipped. The idler pulleys (rollers) had very little play, but play none the less. Water pump seems serviceable, for how long, who knows? Pulley on the tensioner doesn't have any noticeable play either. The serpentine belt had some checking, so it was time for that to go. I opted to do the fan and fan clutch only because I tow. So as far as the debate between 100,000 km vs 100,00 mile TB interval goes. My opinion is that 100,000 miles is reasonable. That said, I wouldn't go longer than I have time wise. Age is as damaging as miles on the timing belt. My If you want to push your luck with the water pump, I say go for it. But do not skip over the idlers (rollers) or the tensioner. Again my If anyone wants the water pump they can have it, just cover shipping. Same goes for the OE fan blade and fan clutch. Woodtick |

Update. After a week of driving post timing belt service I have to say that performance is a little better in that it seems to run a smoother in particular at start up and idle. Then again, maybe it my imagination. BTW the $2200 price quoted by the dealer did not include the nylon fan or Hayden clutch. Thanks again to Diesel Injection Service in Windsor WI for quality service at a competitive price.

I just did my timing belt, tensioner, rollers, water pump, Hayden HD fan clutch and 11-blade nylon fan last weekend at almost 106k miles. My old timing belt sounds about like yours with no major wear or cracking other than a little bit of glazing cracks on the smooth side of the belt. The rollers, the tensioner and the water pump all seemed fine but replaced them anyways to play it safe. As for running smoother I agree and also sounds a bit quieter. Most likely a result of getting the fuel timing set back to the proper specs. |

One technician, Nick, has done a LOT of the CRD belts and really knows the motor. |
