Hey guys, I am considering downsizing from my F250 7.3 diesel. Originally I planned on keeping the truck, and buying a vw diesel, but am thinking a liberty CRD will do everything I want.

In your opinion, how reliable are these things? My 7.3 is nearly bulletproof, I have had to replace injectors, and the HPOP(all done myself) but flawless in the 100K I've put on it (225k total)

what is the longevity of these engines, transmissions?

I just started looking into them this am, I see EGR's and torque converters have issues.

I really don't want to get rid of my truck(which I love) and buy a POS.

Read this, it should get you most of the info you desire.....

They need some modifications up front that they should have left the factory with, but I love mine.

Thanks! I've skimmed over that, I'll check it out again..

How many miles do you have on yours?

I have 130k miles. Bought at 20k miles. Have been looking for about 50,000k miles for something better, no luck yet.
Would not buy one with 100,000 miles.
Interested in what you choose to do.

I have a 2001 7.3 psd and a 2005 crd _the only owner.
I do not have the confidence to buy another crd because this forum is your only source of real knowledge.
Crd has 138k miles and first major problem and it is gone.
I am a decent parts changer but the 7.3 forum help gives me confidence beyond my capabilities.
Just not enough crd owners here to match the 7.3 knowledge.
IMHO

SKINK,
You wouldn't happen to be from Montana?

The CRD is a love/hate relationship. Its a great vehicle and ownership requires desire and ability to work on the rig yourself.

I'm familiar with 7.3 PS trucks and CRDs. That 7.3 is built like a brick sh*thouse. The CRD, in terms of reliability and parts availability can be quite a different experience.

Unless you are planning on working on your CRD yourself, which includes learning about it, gathering special tools and seeking out parts, sometimes from places other than the local parts house, you may be in for a bit of a surprise.

If you like working on vehicles, and can afford having this one out for repairs, buy one. They are very fun to drive when running. They do have known issues with:
transmission (tc, valve, filter drainback)
Engine (head warping, early rocker wear, excessive EGR leading to soot and oil loading in intake system, air in fuel, early turbo failure)
Electrical wiring in 2006 models.

If this was to be your only ride, forget it. Keep the Ford and get a 2003 TDI in good shape.

One thing that few people really fully consider is how rare the CRD is please take a look at my post from a year ago on owning a CRD before you buy one.

I am much happier with the TDI / Xterra, both more mainstream than the CRD.

My first reaction to your question of "how reliable is the CRD"... Laughter.

Keep the truck, and stay FAR FAR away from the CRD. I know those powerstroke trucks too, and the description is accurate. They are built like a brick shitthouse. The minor list of glitches you had in 100k miles will be little more than a shadow to the list you most likely will have on the CRD, and I am one who loved mine.

The CRD is an ill-tempered moody mistress. A real bi-polar biitch. When she is happy, things are great. Unfortunately, she doesn't stay happy for long enough (I never had more than 30k miles in a row without a major repair) and will drain your wallet... Then eat it.

The list of design flaws includes the following, many of which can QUICKLY lead to engine destruction if missed or ignored:
Turbo is too small, fails out even in stock setup, leaking oil RAPIDLY
EGR system
Torque converter
Intake head warping from poor cooling
Lifter / rocker failures
Weak timing components (cams are not keyed)
Poor thermostat design
Bottom end failures from low oil pressure or poor oil selection / maintenance
Oil passages are too small
Oil pump insufficient for engine size

I'm sure I've missed a few items here.

The biggest item on the list: ORPHAN VEHICLE. Mopar wants nothing to do with these, and the dealers are beyond clueless. ALL our support comes from the UK and this forum at this point, with the notable exceptions of GreenDieselEngineering and idparts.

Buy in at your own peril, and don't EVER buy this if will be your only vehicle, unless you like walking.
