Post subject:  Help needed from those running Torque Pro and ELM 327

I just got my ELM 327 OBDII reader and I'm running Torque Pro. My instantaneous MPG reading is way off, and I haven't seen anybody mention that symptom. I thought maybe I missed something in a past post.

I have an '05 CRD with an Ecotune. While running at steady 60 MPH on a flat road, the instant MPG reads low 70's, although it jumps around quite a bit (65-85)-. The fuel flow runs about 2.2 gph, which a simple MPG calculation would indicate about 27, which is closer, but a little low.

The ELM 327 unit is one of the cheap ones from Amazon. I have read that these are a little flaky, so that may be the issue. I don't know what goes into the MPG calculation within Torque Pro. I don't think I have anything set wrong, but here are the settings:

Displacent 2.8 liter
Curb Wt 2109 kg
Fuel Diesel
OBD2 protocol ISO 9141-2

I plug in the transmitter, start the vehicle, then start the Torque Pro.

If anybody here can add the missing piece to the puzzle that would make the instant MPG reading closer to correct (the reason I bought the thing) it would be appreciated. I have not run it long enough to know if the average MPG is any closer to correct, nor do I know if it is causing issues with vehicle performance.

Or, if you can tell me how to make the Jeep actually get 72 MPG, that will work! :pepper:

I take it you had the GPS on your phone enabled? Obviously if the GPM is close and MPG is way off it has something to do with how it was reading your vehicles speed.

Yes, GPS enabled. I suppose it's possible it doesn't work inside the car -- I'll check tomorrow.

Does Torque use the phone's GPS for it's speed data? It didn't dawn on me that it might, since it can get that data from the vehicle. Seems like a more reliable source, since the GPS won't work reliably in downtown areas or tunnels or even some vehicles.

Instant mpg is garbage on mine too. I don't know if torque uses obd or GPS speed but neither one should cause that amount of error.
I think there is an offset in the vehicle profile settings you can use as an mpg fudge factor.

Yes, there is a correction, but I'm sure it's for fine tuning, not for cutting the number in half. Good to know I'm not the only one, but still...

It sure seems like somebody who has had success with this system would have mentioned this problem if everyone were having it.

I guess it's possible it is a mechanical problem with a sensor, but I don't know where it gets it's data from. I'll do some further testing tomorrow.

Mine is at least in the correct ballpark. It peaks around my average mpg on the flat while just holding 5th gear (110km.h). My average is based on a mix of around 15% city 35% rural and 50% highway so I'm guessing it's probably 10-15% low.

I think it was Enhanced MPG Calculation in the OBDII Adapter Settings menu that fixed it for me. Before that it was way out. Let us know if this works for the 2005 as well.

Haha, I discovered that today, and it does put it within a reasonable range, thanks for confirming.

I had a couple of issues today, it locked up the app every time the 3 times went any distance), and I think I had the tranny brain freeze once, but it was just as I was slowing down coming into town and I stopped soon thereafter, so I'm not sure. I had the "faster communication" option turned off once and on once, but how is yous set? It seemed like it should be in the "off" setting to minimize the load from polling, but I don't know.

Thanks.

Yeah, it works better with faster communication off. It always locks up eventually but I can regularly get half an hour or more. Never had it make the transmission go limp though.
