Just got my 2005 crd!

Drove almost 200 miles to get it today. on the drive back at 75 mph with the cruise on I was getting a bit over 32 mpg (according to the display) I expected maybe 26-28 so I was very happy with this. When I hit the 2 lane 60 mph I reset it and was hitting 33mpg easy.

Loving the torque, lots of power that I was not expecting. If I step on the gas around corners it will pretty easily kick the back end free, although I am in Iowa so there is a bit of sand on the roads this time of year. Is this mileage and power common out of these stock, I didnt spend a lot of time under the hood but I didnt notice a green tuner anywhere so I am guessing its all stock. I did read the noob guide before i bought it and this one was a great deal. 82000 miles so i have a bit of time before the timing belt needs done, very clean and ran great today. The only issue I see so far is a error message that says something about a tire sensor missing or not working. Anyone know what thats about and can it be traced to a specific tire.

You will see me lots on here as a trick this thing out, I am sure there will be lots of questions.

Congrats :D and glad to hear on the great MPG'. Got my wife an 06 CRD a month ago and we're getting around 15 MPG city. I'm putting a 3.7 air box on and plan on replacing the stock muffler here soon. Hoping that helps a bit. Then other to a GDE eco-tune. But we're loving it. Been in the mountains of SW Oregon a few times now and done a shallow stream crossings. all on street tread.

Congratulations! Hope you enjoy CRD ownership for a long time.

Tire sensor issue may just be a bad sensor, hard to tell which one though. IIRC, in '05, the best year to own BTW, the EVIC does not get specific like other years.

Speaking of EVIC, don't let it fool you with the MPG. Hand calculate is best.

Check out the NOOB guide and Green Diesel Engineering.

Have fun!

Comments:
1. if on cold start the RPMs "flair" to 1000 and then drop back you have a GDE tune, very good, which you should confirm by emailing you VIN to Keith at GDE. If not put that tune on your to do list.
2. regardless the EVIC mpg tends, to put it mildly, to be wildly optimistic. Check you speedometer and odometer (their readings are independent) with a GPS run of at least 25 miles on a relatively flat and straight stretch of road. Then hand calculate with appropriate adjustment. Actual mpg for a stock CRD with stock tires depends on a lot of things but I used to get ca. 18 in town (10 miles one way drive to work, relatively flat roads, lots of lights, no speed higher than 45mph, average speed ca. 20mph) and ca. 27-28 hwy (62mph/1500rpm, with or without AC, windows up). With GDE tune more like 22/32 all things being more or less equal.
3. EVIC should show individual tire pressure for the 4 on the ground - my 05 one does. See Owner's Manual which should be on top shelf in glove box but if not can be downloaded. A wheel with a bad sensor won't, I presume, show pressure. If all show pressure it's likely your spare tire. Dorman 974-001 is a reasonably priced aftermarket sensor.
4. I wouldn't push that timing belt too much longer. It's rubber and now 7+ years old and they do get "hard" with age. Not saying do it right now but unless you drive enough to hit ca. 100k pretty soon I'd recommend doing it sooner rather than later.

Welcome to the group.

Congratulationns!

Yep the one thing you know about the EVIC MPG is that it is NOT the MPG you are getting. I tracked it for the first 70 fill-ups or so. Once it was close. Once it was low. The average was 3.3 MPG higher than actual, with the worst being 8.6 MPG high. And it's not anything like consistent -- you cant just assume it's +3.3. It could be anywhere. But almost never LOW!

And get the Green Diesel tune, definitely.

Mine has done this forever when starting cold. I do not, yet, have a tune.

Welcome.

I would strongly recommend changing the timing belt due to age degradation.

Call Kieth @ GDE. Eco tune is also highly recommended.

Another simple way to check for a GDE tune is to do the ORM and see if the CEL lights up or not; "not" is good.

Provided, of course, that it does not have a SEGR instead. However, the SEGR wiring should probably be visible where it ties into the existing wiring, whereas the GDE tune is completely stealth.

Welcome to the club.

I hope you enjoy your vehicle as much as I do between the times it breaks.

Please dump the unknown oil (probably 0w40) and put a quality 5w40 or 10w40 diesel oil in it. Better late than never to help reduce rocker wear.

Good luck.
