Post subject:  Transgo and GDE TCM tune

I did a search and got some good info, but I have a specific question to ask.

I have the GDE TCM tune which is working ok for me, and I have NO problems with my front pump (knock on wood) and I do not plan on dropping the trans again (The EURO TC was a fun garage project, but one time only).

I am do for a transmission fluid change, so I was curious if the Transgo springs and such for the valve body are worth buying and putting in since I will have the pan off. From what I read I will only notice a difference in shifts if I am hard on the throttle (not very often that happens).

Also, anyone have a good suggestion for a drain valve for the stock Transmission pan?

GDE does not suggest using Transgo. Make SURE you use factory filters so you do not have a problem with drain back.

DOC,

We have no opinion either way. I have not tested it in any of our CRDs. Several of our customers tell me it does not make much difference except for maybe slightly more aggressive (rougher) shifting.

The torque converter, filters and front pump seem to be the source of 99.9% of the problems on the CRD transmission. The base 45RFE might be the best slush box to come out of Chrysler...ever. That is not saying much, but a step in the right direction.

X2 on the oem filters.

I am using WIX filters from Amazon, at 70k I used NAPA ones with no problems. WIX are still on par with OEM correct? I'll hold off on the shift kit then, that's almost a full tank of fuel I could spend the money on instead!

So many people have had problems with multiple types of non-OEM trans filters with it taking forever for the fluid to be pumped back into TC so you can get going on cold mornings, I would NOT consider using ANYTHING else.

Also, I would worry about damaging the TC if you do not wait long enough for it to refill fully, before engaging a gear.

Wow, I have been using WIX replacements in most everything (Fuel, Oil, Air) and I thought transmission ones were still okay, I guess I missed reading that on here! I'll have to order some then, thanks!

I had drainback issues and factory filters (changed twice) made no difference. New front pump worked for me (did this along with the Euro TC). I have the Transgo shift kit installed with the GDE Trans Tune and it does shift a bit firmer but only under aggressive acceleration. I originally had the resistor installed that came from the kit but 2-3 shifts would jar your eye teeth and I removed it per Transgo recommendation and that issue went away. I believe the resister was a trans pressure sensor fooler and allowed higher transmission fluid pressures.

I'm up to replace my filters and fluid this summer (if we ever get one here); the filters are on their way from a supplier of Jeep spare parts, as is 10 litres of ATF+4 (only comes in 5L bottles). Correct me if I'm wrong - but from what I see, the only way to refill is down the dipstick tube?

As for a drain valve - I've ordered a B&M valve from Amazon.

Also, I see that a gasket is available - recommended or stick with RTV?

Refill is down the dipstick tube and personally, I prefer the gasket over RTV.

Thanks Amslube - that's going to be a giggle - getting 6+ litres down the dipstick tube  I'll order the gasket.

Gasket could now be a problem - can't find a supplier in the UK. Rockauto does them BUT - gasket cost £2.97 (fine with that) - postage (USPS) £34.78! Tube of RTV - £4.60. So far - looks like RTV has the advantage.

In that case use, the RTV. I've used both over the years on various transmissions and both work well. The gasket is a bit faster and neater but if the gasket is not readily available at a reasonable cost, by all means the RTV will work fine. I use a funnel with a long neck that fits into the dipstick tube for filling...really is not that bad.
