Post subject:  Do I have a faulty injector?

Hi
I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty 2.5 CRD. She starts easy , no problem with power, and if I drive relaxed I can drive forever there is no problems. As soon as I accelerate hard, pushing the revs high, and I slow down and stop, she idles only on 3 cyl. Then if I give a little bit of gas,it sounds like the 4th cyl will come in and idles perfect. If I leave the gas she idles on 3 cyl again. This will carry on until I switch off the Jeep and leave it to stand for 30min, than it is back to normal, until I push her again. Can it be a faulty injector. I had the Jeep at the agents, but they cannot find a problem.

Regards

On the Dodge Cummins, you can use the DRBIII diagnostic tool to read the ECM and monitor the contribution of each injector. When you have a bad injector it shows up..

I'm guessing that something similar is possible with this one.

They can also leak, and you can check the fuel return lines for each and see if the fuel leaving them is excessive. I think that diagnostic has been discussed around here, and should be in the service manual.

As an alternative theory..

I notice that high mileage VM's seem to suffer from significant wear on the rockers. I wonder if it's possible that you've got a rocker/lifter problem and a sticking valve? Really reaching on this idea... :)

Thanks Mark
I had the Jeep at the dealers on the computer and at a local garage, and not one of there computers can find a fault. I hope it is not the lifters, sounds like big bucks.

This was a test for the injectors

just be careful - the high pressure is dangerous.

You may be sucking in air to the fuel system. Do you have a 2nd gen fuel head?

ATXKJ, Thanks for the link will try that.

I believe the 2.5 CRD's early on had the Racor fuel head and did not have the same issues as our later CRD's.

I live in SA and can not believe the price of these injectors, man it is big bucks.
:x
Just the testing of the injectors on a test bench is R2000, than I still need to take them out myself. Than to replace the fualty one will be R4500ea.

sorry I missed the 2002 year.

Still sounds like a fuel issue to me. sucking in air into the system.

If it does suck air will you be able to see the air bubbles in the glass bowl below the fuel filter.
If it was air in the system will it not have the problem the whole time, and not only when I floor it, just wondering.
How can I check to see if it is air?

There is something new to me. Glass Bowl in the fuel system?? That 2002 2.5 I don't know much about it.
Is the bowl located between the filter and high pressure fuel pump? I installed a clear line there to look for air in my CRD. Try having someone thrust the engine from idle to 3500 rpm and look for air in your glass bowl?

Hi kjjet
I’m referring to that see trough container under the fuel filter / water trap with the heating element in. I can see the fuel there, but don’t see any air bubbles.

Our CRD's in the US do not have a glass bowl under the filter. Is it in line between the filter and the High pressure fuel pump (HPFP)? If it is? Try having someone thrust the engine from idle to 3500 rpm and look for air in your glass bowl? Also check all your hose clamps. They cut thru the rubber hose's and let air in. If you suspect, you can cut off 1 inch and reinstall the hoses.

Good luck.
