Hey fellow CRD heads,

Sorry if this has been covered in the past, but I couldn't find any threads directly related to my issue, so here goes.

Image

I am trying to sort out an issue before I order the Eco Tune from Keith. Some background:

I seem to have a boost leak. It started as a quiet buzz and then gradually turned into a loud squeal (all under boost). I inspected the area around the FCV and intake elbow and noticed residue around the intake elbow. So I replaced the square gasket between the intake elbow (reattaching the EGR elbow was a huge pain in the booty). However, when I started the engine, the whistling sound was still there. Oddly enough, when I entered the freeway for the first time and got under heavy boost the noise miraculously went away!

Fast forward two/three weeks and the quiet buzz/squeal had returned, gone away, and then returned again. Then, yesterday, that noise went away and has been replaced with a whooshing noise. It's clearly a boost leak. I am thinking it's the EGR elbow/v-band connection that's the culprit, circled in the above photo, because it took me 3 hours to get it reconnected when I had everything apart. It's darn near impossible to get to even after removing the fuel head, battery, boost hoses and battery box.

So, now I am wondering what I should do. I do not want to keep having to deal with the EGR system. Frankly, I'd be happy to remove the FCV and disable the EGR entirely but I am not sure the best/easiest way to go about this. (FYI my FCV is unplugged as well as my MAF, currently.) I'm not sure how the Eco Tune would effect this. I know it retains some EGR and FCV function, but I am not sure exactly how it works.

Ultimately, I want to get rid of this boost leak. Eco Tune will be happening soon. What should I do?

Thanks!

There have been many here that say that the FCV going out makes a whistling noise. Turbos also make whistling noises before they crap out.

Check your turbo first as it's the most likely, check for play in the shaft.

Is the CEL on? If it was EGR/FCV the CEL would be on unless you did the ORM. If it's the turbo crapping out, no CEL just whistly noisy goodness.

Lots on here have lost a turbo, including myself, with no warning. Lots have whistling turbos that they fixed.

Caveat Emptor
