Post subject:  ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT

Hi everyone can anyone help with this.
I tried to start my 04 cherokee/liberty crd to quickly without allowing the glow plugs to work, after cranking over for a few seconds i turned off the ignition and tried to restart again this time allowing a few seconds for preheat, my jeep started but it was in a sort of limp mode with no throttle response and a lot of smoke. I turned off the ignition and restarted again, this time it ran fine but, the engine management light is now illuminated. I would appreciate any info on what may be the problem and also any info on how to turn off the light. Thanks, Duncan.

The temporary limp mode probably triggered the check engine light. If the problem has gone away there is a really good chance the light will go out after several (any where from 3-10 or so) regular runs to operating temperature. Otherwise clearing the light will require a code reader.

If I were a betting man, I would bet your EGR/FCV just failed.

I would probably bet pretty hard too, lots of cash.

It's an 04 export model with a different EGR and IIRC that EGR can be turned off by plugging a vacuum line with no CEL being thrown. However, I'm doing this from possibly faulty memory and will defer to an actual 04 owner.
