I had my first ever oil analysis from Blackstone labs. Mobile 0W-40 has been used since new, and this oil was in the Jeep since July 2012. I put 6300 miles on it. Blackstone doesn't see any problem with Iron levels; they were at 14 ppm. My Zinc was at 1296. I may go back to 0W-40 after this next oil check. I just switched to T6 Shell because of the talk on this forum.

I've had the GDE tune since around 65k though.

So is it safe to assume that because iron levels are low that rocker arms are still in good condition?

The debate over rocker arm failure has centered mainly around oil type and EGR.
Looks like your engine spent its first 65K miles with a fully functioning EGR and darn near all its life
on 0w-40 oil.

I'm inclined to think that there is more to this than just oil and EGR.

Maybe the manufacturer had a bad run of rocker arms and they some how all made it to the U.S.?

Obviously one oil analysis isn't going to prove anything, but I thought that I would add my findings to the mix. I've had this Jeep since new, and I've changed the oil every 7-9k miles with Mobile 0W-40. I was worried about all the talk on here, so I changed my oil early and had the analysis done to find out what it was like. I'm happy at this point to find out the oil wasn't packed with little shards of lifter and rocker arm. Since I've carried this hobby this far, I may as well continue to check my oil and posting.

I really think that the GDE tune made a massive difference though. The removal of the EGR valve is huge to anyone that has done it.

How many total miles? Have you done the MAF test?

I'm at 115k and I need to do the MAF test this week. I guess that would be the final addition to this post. What should the number read again for a healthy air flow? I don't even know the units it should be measured in.

Based on Keith's original post, he suggested a "good" reading at sea level is 650 to 720 mg/stroke. Engines with poor rocker arms were in the range of 500 to 550 mg/stroke.

My CRD idles at 760rpm and my DashCommand reads in lb/min, I think others read in g/s.

The conversion to other units would be as follows:

mg/stroke lb/min g/s
good 720 2.41 18.2
good 650 2.17 16.5
bad 550 1.84 13.9
bad 500 1.67 12.7

Lots of people have done Mobil 0w-40 oil analysis done. Its good oil and dose not break down. The lab tells you to run it longer.

Lots of VW owners swear by it and have over 300k of use on their engines.
