Not sure if its normal for the CRD, but this thing stinks. Can definitely tell its a diesel. Its worse than my pre emissions 03 Cummins. Just wondered if they all smell this much?

Did someone hollow out your cat? Mine has a classic diesel fume smell, like our old international tractor had when I was a kid. Cat is intact.

From your last report you vented the CCV to the ground, Correct? This dose stink, like i told you it would.

Install a PROVENT or just reinstall the CCV to the intake and eat some oil. It's not so bad as long as the EGR is stoped.

If the fumes are not from the CCV? Do you mean exhaust fumes? No..these CRD's burn clean. Check to see if the CAT is still installed?

Mine has no cat and it has alot of diesel exhaust smell also

Ya previous owner gutted the cat., for some stupid reason. But my Cummins dont even smell this much. And its pushing A LOT more HP/fuel through a 5" straight pipe.

kjjet, yes its vented but it smelled the same before I did that. My trucks vented just like that, from the factory, and doesn't smell this much.

I know I cant really compare the kj to my truck but I just wouldnt think this little 4 banger would smell this much? It doesn't bother me but ive had people come up to me and tell me it stinks! And backing into and out of the garage makes the house smell for a little while. The wife loves that!

(normal)

Yes...believe it or not a high flow cat is usefull on a diesel.

Still just surprised that it smells this much? Again I'm comparing to my truck. But anyhow, I may have to keep my eyes open for a cat to put on there.

It is technically NOT a "CAT". It is a "filter" with fairly exotic materials. I would only replace with OEM CRD.

However, you have to also get rid of EHM to REALLY reduce smell.

With the OEM CCV in place, a flapper valve closes at higher boost levels pressurizing the crankcase at the worst possible time.

NOT a good idea. So, I live with the smell (see sig). Clean CAT also reduces EGTs when towing in high ambients.

I believe it is a real diesel oxidation catalyst. Says catalyst on the sticker right under the hood. If it were a filter like modern DPFs, what would be the cleaning mechanism? It would just plug up.

Post subject:  Re: A lot of fumes....

You can call it whatever you want, but it is a devise that helps collect unburned fuel and will not normaly plug up due to it is high flow. It will have little to no effect on the engine performance.

New Diesel engines have DPF'S. They collect all soot and unburnt fuel untill sensors in the exhaust show the ECM that the DPF is plugging up and it starts a regeneration cycle that burns off all the soot and fuel. Very HOT! Also EGR installed. These units decrease MPG by 6 to 8 MPG. Most also have 2 cats also. My 2012 Jetta had all of this. Now it has a high flow cat only. To decrease smell.

Another great idea from our EPA. NOT

After the years of driving a truck+construction equipment the diesel smell is an aquired taste. A gasoline engine with a converter, now that stinks.

I agree, but I drove truck for years, live on a farm, work in a fab shop and weld all day, own a diesel truck, and this Libby has more exhaust fumes than any diesel ive been around.

Even just pulling up to a stop sign or stop light, it'll smell up the cabin inside. It seems to be leaking exhaust from where the downpipe and turbo are joined. Is there a gasket there or just a bell flange and V band clamp?

Post subject:  Re: A lot of fumes....

It should not smell up the cabin unless there is a combustion related leak in the engine bay. Thoughts:
1. as mentioned above a EHM where the CCV is vented to atmosphere/ground will stink up the cabin unless the vent tube is run toward the rear of the vehicle.
2. you might have a leak where the EGR tube that routes around the rear of the engine joins the exhaust manifold
3. same, as you mention, where the turbo joins the exhaust pipe.

Both 2 and 3 are a flange and "V" band clamp with no gasket.

Of course you could have a bad exhaust manifold gasket.

Ehm isn't exhaust fumes. Just crank case and they smell different. This fume smell was present before the Ehm. I'm pretty sure its around the turbo/downpipe area as I'm seeing some soot around this area. Guess I'm going to have to dig into this.

Princess's had the cab stink while it was still under warranty. The mental defects at the dealership just tightened the v-clamp It still leaked. I bought a new v-clamp, put a floor jack under the exhaust system to level it and realign things, put the new clamp on and snugged her down good. No cab smell since. Might just do the trick for you.

Post subject:  Re: A lot of fumes....

Last summer I had diesel stink in the cabin. It turned out to be a leak on the low pressure fuel return line at one of the injectors leaving fuel on the top of the engine. I replaced the line, the leak stopped, and the stink was gone. :D

It's exhaust fumes, not raw diesel.

Post subject:  Re: A lot of fumes....

run boidiesel..
atleast it'll smell better..

what's you MPG? low?
engine temp?
you might have a leaking injector that dump more raw fuel into the exhaust..causing more smell

just some thoughts

Right about 20mpg, lifted on 245/75-16 tires. I've only had it a month and the first 2 weeks were spent doing timing belt, water pump, thermostat, temperature is good. etc and all the rockers and both cams. Oil level is good, same as 2 weeks ago when I changed it. And it don't smell like fuel.

Thanks! I do appreciate the suggestions.
