Does anybody have pics of this? I cant find any. I've been trying to figure out what it is or where it is, and what is it's purpose. Thanks

It's the only pulley attached to the alternator. Inside the pulley is a decoupler mechanism.

Really? You don't say.

The reason I asked is because I don't think mine has one. Mines just for a regular pulley like every alt. should have. I just wanted a pic to verify.

The is a decouple pulley with a built in clutch set the clutch is what goes bad in these just make sure you get the right part number and here is a pick my old one has the white build up. And if your old one looks like the one on the right i will sell you one for 50 plus shipping.

Some one has replaced yours with a hard mounted pulley not the decoupler I remember people talking about this on the forums but can't remember the issues it caused. I know with that set up the alternator runs constantly instead of just when it needs to.

It is not just that it runs all the time, it is constantly coupled to the serpentine belt, which means that the torque pulses from the 4 cylinder motor are transmitted to the belt, the tensioner, the idlers, and the alternator, etc. causing premature failure of all these components.

So I assume I would put one on and lose the pulley that's on it now.

Isn't it there to allow the alternator to 'coast' to a stop instead of stop almost instantly when you shut off the engine? Diesels come to a near dead stop when you cut off the flow of fuel. Gasoline engines slow down and then stop. Hard, fast stops are hard on spinning things like alternators...at least that's the explanation I remember reading somewhere!

This gives a better understanding of how each pully works.

Good videos. Thanks, looks like I need to put one on mine instead of the solid pulley it has on it now.

How long is the stud for the alt. With the decoupler pulleys? I'm wondering if mines to short? Looking at the pic of mine it doesnt appear to be long enough to get a nut on the stud with the pulley on it? Is the pulley recessed for the nut like on my solid pulley?

On the stock alternator there is no nut. The pulley threads right on and the belt is always turning it in the tightening direction.

Ah, ok, that makes sense. I was wondering. Thanks
