2005 crd is smoking light gray not black smoke, rough running between 1000-2000 rpm, Idles smooth and runs smooth above 2000 rpm. Engine has a knock/ rattle when you rev it up and let off quick. The noise seems to be coming from #3 cylinder. Switched injectors and noise is still at #3, unplugged injector and noise is gone. Seems to fire as strong as other cylinders. Checked injector return line for flow and it was low. Any ideas? Would air in the fuel cause the engine noise? In #3 Rick |

Air in the fuel would not cause noise located in a specific cylinder. STOP DRIVING IT NOW. Read the last line of my signature. Now read it again. And again. Get the picture? You have something BAD wrong in there. Noises in a specific cylinder are NOT to be ignored or trifled with. I hope you have a spare vehicle, because you need to take the Jeep apart and find out what is going on before it does more permanent things to itself. Noises WILL NOT CURE THEMSELVES in any way other than badly. You might be able to pull the oil pan and have a look at the bottom end without too much trouble. I never got a chance to do this with my CRD before engine #2 grenaded on me (while making a noise at idle) and since you swapped the injectors around, that isolated them as not being the cause. If you unbolt the top of both engine mounts on either side, a hoist on the point at the front might be able to get you enough lift to get the pan off. I will admit I am guessing about that, but what is not a guess - you need to chase this down. If you would rather try the top end first (it could possibly be a rocker / lifter too) then once you have the timing belt off, pull all the injectors, the cam pulleys and the front inner cover... And work your way to take the valve cover off. Honestly, I don't know which is more likely, but if the top shows nothing... Rod bearings. Good luck, you will need it. |

What geordi said. And remember to return the injector to its original position once you have done the repairs as stated....the injectors have a unique number on them which is programmed in the ECU....will change the performance/economy slightly if incorrect. |

For what it's worth, the #3 cylinder is where the EGR elbow attaches to the intake and is where Rocker/Lifter failures have occurred on at least 3 CRD's that I can think of. That is where my failures started, at the #3 cylinder. It's not good news, but it will be better if you get in front of it now than let it go and ruin other things. Don't listen to our advice AT YOUR OWN PERIL, Geordi and I have both witnessed these failures personally and have had to deal with them one way or another. You need to get that intake off and look, because if changing the injector doesn't change the noise then it has nothing to do with injectors sticking or air in the fuel and a LOT to do with the roller bearing in the center of your rocker arm seizing up. |

1. OUCH! 2. DO NOT RUN! 3. From everything you have tried, I simply cannot imagine a scenario where the sound comes from the top end (unfortunately). I think taking the top end apart may lead you astray. You will probably find some rocker wear, replace them, then have the motor blow with a rod going through the block. I do not know if anyone has successfully pulled the pan and inspected the rod bearings without removing the motor, but that is where you need to go next. Please take pictures as you go. It would be really good to see one apart BEFORE it blows. So far, everyone with a rod rap has kept running their's until they ventilated the block. Sorry, DOC |
