Hi all,

I just wanted to share an experience I had buying a fuel filter through the parts shop at the local Jeep dealer. I picked up the CRD at around 18k miles so this was the second filter I put on at about 55k miles.

The first fuel filter I bought the guy told me that they could not sell the filter without selling the entire water separator/heater assembly. When I got the new one I had to wire in a new plug since it had changed from the original. I assume this was a recall item since I remember reading about safety issues on the fuel heater. It was no big deal. I think the swap was probably easier than replacing just the filter.

Fast forward to a few months ago when I needed a new filter. The guy at the parts counter said they couldn't order the filter separate from the rest of the unit. He called up and had mopar split the item off and I paid a reduced price (not sure exactly, but maybe $60 rather than $160).

A few days later I go to pick it up. When I open the box and the entire water separator and filter unit are in the box. I just swapped it out rather than go and try to fix things. Am I missing something here on how to order the part? Should I just go to an aftermarket product when I'm due to change things again?

Phil

:banghead: :ROTFL: I'd add this to the list of all time stupid dealer stories but for the fact that it has happened before but not often and not twice to the same person. Take home message don't go to the dealer for any basic stuff like filters, batteries, wiper blades, unless you are in tight with the parts manager and can get a good price on the right parts.

As to the gas filter the Mopar # is 52129238AA and it doesn't take a genus to find it in the KJ parts fiche where it's listed as "filter, fuel" immediately after "FILTER, Fuel/Water Separator". I'm partial to WIX although NAPA Gold is the same thing with a different paint job and the same basic parts #. Oil filter WIX filters-oil 51515 (7 qts oil) vs 51516 (stock 6.3 qts oil); I like the oversize one and it's an even fill amount. WIX fuel 33647; air filter 42329; transmission filter set 58843. The WIX fuel filter runs ca. $28 from Amazon with free shipping.

As to the filter head. If you have the one with the blue plug on the drivers side (heater element and it's almost the same size as the other plug) then you have the 2n gen filter head which is good. It wasn't a recall item but probably should have been. FYI going price for the combined 2n gen filter head with a filter on it and a WIF sensor in the filter and the wiring is ca. $125.

I'd suggest you post the extra filter head for sale in case someone needs one.

If you have not already done so read Sir Sam's NOOB guide and keep in mind the timing belt job that must be done no later than 100,000 miles.

Does anyone know the Wix or Napa fuel filter number for the original fuel head?

It seemed like something was wrong when I had to buy the whole assembly. I'll chalk this up as a learning experience.

Thanks for the info papaindigo! With the XJ as my daily driver I haven't spent too much time with the CRD. Now that I'll be using it as my new daily driver I've got some learning to do.

joelukex4 - filter is no different between 1st and 2n gen filter head. The only difference is on the 2n gen filter head the driver side fuel heater element plug is wider, hence the need for the new wiring pigtail, and the element itself is "beefer" to keep it from overheating/burning out/leaking fuel and air.

philgar - like I said the place to start learning is Sam's NOOB guide. While there get both the 05 and 06 FSMs. 05 lacks diesel cooling system info and diagnostics but has illustration keys while 06 is the reverse. But for the stability control system on the 06 there isn't much difference. Also if you send me your email address I can do a file dump, may take several emails, of all my saved "how to" downloads from this forum and the Aussie one.

Wanted to say thanks for all the great info shared by all the members. I am a long time lurker of the site and use the info provided to learn and grow taking good care of my CRD. Actually this is my first post after viewing as a guest for 2+ years. Spend most of my time trying to keep and build CUCV trucks that have there own unique challenges.

Wanted to post my most recent order for filters as I have used discount fleet supply for my current and past trucks and tractors. They have strong pricing (wix fuel for $17.50) but you have to pay shipping.... blah. Not too bad if you do a group buy and get a case of filters. I like the wix filters and have had great service from them. Many are made down near Charlotte as well so hurray for the home teams. I normally only do 1 order a year since I stock up.

here

CRD order items:
Wix fuel 33647 $17.54
Wix OE oil 51516 Case of 12 $40.44
Wix transmission 58843 $22.74
Wix oil with synthetic media 51515XP Case of 6 $45.78

The 51515 and 51515xp by wix are the Mobil M1-301 cross and same filter I use on my VW Passat. The xp has the synthetic filter material I think that is main difference. As a avid reader I won't even go into what oil I use as its really seems to each their own.

I will try and post a oil analysis soon as I think they are great comparison for everyone.
