Long ago there was discussion here about the benefits of adding a fuel cooler to the fuel return line. Is anybody here using a fuel cooler? |

no one recently - but Retmil, Ranger1, MackJ - folks that run in hot weather - or tow in hot weather as you run low on fuel the remainder will get hot and the engine will reduce power something like this

Comments from GDE posted on their forum back in August 2009 "A fuel cooler is not necessary on the KJ CRD. The temps rarely get over 130 F and only in low fuel level situations. Towing a 5000lb trailer with low fuel one can see up to 175 F with less than two gallons remaining in the tank...ie. with low fuel light on. Not something most people would ever consider doing. A fuel limitation starts around 160 F and progesses up to 195 F at which time the engine will only idle. We have never seen temps near this high. A fuel cooler can be a drawback if living in cold climates, there is more potential for line freeze with a cooler and the fuel heater on the vehicle does nothing for frozen fuel lines near the tank." |

It was the thread about the Derale transmission cooler that got me thinking about the fuel cooler again. Thank for the picture. I have felt my CRD get sluggish on a hot summer afternoon. Usually when the fuel level is at 1/4 tank or less. If I stop and fill up the tank, the sluggishness goes away. Being that I live in Florida, I have never considered the possibility of fuel getting too cold. I've never even seen "winter" diesel fuel. |

You can always have a bypass, summit racing sells a bunch of Y connectors (fuel distribution block), and you can also add a valve so you can turn on/off the cooler or return line. |

I try to never go below 1/4-3/8th tank level in hot weather if I'm towing so I wouldn't consider it. My huge Racor 245 fuel filter acts as a heat sink and I'm sure it helps drop temps a bit but having a cooler shouldn't hurt. |
