Very interesting, but didn't GM already develop variable valve timing? I thought their system might have been based on an electric actuator rather than this air pressure system. They don't say where they get the air from, but a diesel has more than enough power to add a small continuous compressor and take-up air tank. Bigger truck diesels already have the air system built in.

Durability will be the real question, but I like the thought that this completely removes the need for camshafts from the timing system. No more lifters, no more rockers, no more mechanical losses from driving all that mechanical mess. All you need to drive then is the water pump and the fuel pump. That could lead to a big jump in economy!

Over 225 CRDs currently driving with my valves, timing belt, rockers, or ARP Studs.
Bad noises = REALLY bad things.

I think GM just rotated the cams with respect to their sprockets based on engine RPM.

I don't know exactly how their system works, but just rotating the lobes wouldn't (I don't think) give you the ability to shut the cylinder off completely and not still generate SOME compressive resistance. The video mentioned Audi and "sliding" the lobes along the length of the cam, so there must be some way that doing that wouldn't affect the lifter itself. In our CRD system, moving the lobe would just knock the rocker off the valve, and the whole thing would fall apart!

Interesting times, for certain.

This concept is not new and different iterations have been around awhile, but like any new technology it takes many years of development before it reaches a point where it is feasible for large scale practical implementation.
