Post subject:  Transmission Limp Mode..... PLEASE HELP

Hey guys I have a 2005 Liberty CRD LIMITED with 160,000 miles. Recently had it go into Limp mode after a long trip. Fluid is full maybe a little over full. Codes are P0700 and P0120. I can disconnect battery and it will let me drive normally for a little bit then it will go back into limp mode again. I had to tow it from OHIO back to WISCONSIN :furious: . If you guys can help me resurrect this beast it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

P0700 doesn't tell you anything except that there is a fault code stored in the TCM. P0120 is not on the valid KJ code lists that I have but a Google search suggests it's related to the throttle position sensors (on the go pedal in the cab - they replace the mechanical connection of that pedal to the engine). Try unplugging that connector; clean; apply dielectric grease; replug and see what happens. It's also possible that the system got "confused" when you accidentally pressed both the go pedal and the brake pedal at the same time.

Otherwise you may have to visit a dealer or someone else with a code reader that can read both ECU and TCM codes in the kludge of a computer system the KJ has. Just any old code reader won't work.

Bottom line I suspect a sensor problem but cannot really help on what sensor.

P0120 is Throttle Position sensor and probably is a seperate issue from your Transmission.

That you were able to reset the limp mode says it's not a mechanical problem, but probably an electrical or hydraulic one.

Most likely your Solenoid pack in your Transmission is experiencing issues, mine just blew up and I was only at 120k.

P0700 is a generic transmission code, and you'll have to get it scanned at a transmission shop or the like to pull the other codes as this just tells you where to look, not exactly what's wrong.

My money is on Solenoid pack though, and at 150k did you renew the filters/fluids?

I was thinking solenoid pack as well. I bought the liberty at 100,000 miles. It has a new reman trans in it so the previous owners must have had issues. The fluid looks like new and I have not changed it. I will plan on that once I figure what is causing the limp mode. I will see if I can get it scanned again. Also I had a 2C solenoid fault a few thousand miles ago. But I attributed that to low fluid. Just want to get a decent idea on what I'm dealing with before I start throwing money at it. I will update again once I scan it.

Replaced solenoid, filters, and fluid. Ran fine for a while but went back into limp mode. Any ideas?

Take it to a transmission shop probably, unless you're really familiar with them.

At this point you can either attribute the valve body itself or issues in the pump which is a known issue with this transmission.

Good luck, I'm empathetic.

Mine had a short in the cable from the trans up to the engine. I gave up and had to dealer find it. Cost me five hours @ $89. This was after I replaced solenoid pack and the valve body. If you take anything apart, it will relearn after a few drives, the harsh shifting will fix itself.

Mine abruptly went into limp mode one night. My GDE scanner only had the 700 code. But my VW scanner (Ross Tech VCDS) actually pulled the codes from the TCM and it said it was the electronic sensor on the side of the trans! The code was a P0725. Try to find a scanner that will read the TCM. If you have a P0725 code it's the speed sensor. They're cheap and easy to replace. My transmission guy replaced both of mine parts / labor for $140.

I think got both speed sensors off ebay for about $26. Easy install, 10 minutes max for both.

Sorry for such a late response. Mine had the same thing as r1perk. Transmission control wiring harness that ran from trans to tcm rubbed through wiring insulation near alternator bracket and after 160k+ miles of vibrations it eventually wore through and was causing a short. Also replaced solenoid pack, filters, and fluid. Runs great now. Thanks for your help!!!
