Howdy, I have owned my 06 liberty CRD for 5 years, and absolutely love it. Just took it in to find out that the transfer case oil is burned and am not sure yet if it needs to be replaced. I am no mechanical expert, but after doing some reading, it appears that the torque converters on the Liberty CRD are undersized. Should I get the aftermarket upgraded torque converter? Over the years I have done a bit of towing, primarily camp trailers. Just got a new 18 foot jayco swift baha edition. The CRD tows it fine (`2500 pounds empty), but I am now worried that the recent towing of the new camper caused the damage???? Advise for a stock guy? |

What do you mean burned? And are you talking about the transfer case or the transmission? The only reason I ask is because this will help in figuring out possibly what is going on. Because if it is you transfer case that is as easy as popping the case in half and inspecting everything then re-assembly and refill. If it is the transmission might be time for a set of filters and a transmission flush and if it is shuddering then a torque convertor. Also welcome to LOST and read Sams Noob guide lots of great help on the motor side there. |

It is the transfer case with burned oil (according to the mechanic). I think that the filters etc are ok, but have heard about the torque converter for years. Often after a cold start, there is a delay after shifting before tranny engages. Could that be related to the tc? Thanks for the help. |

Sounds like drain back, can be caused by a number of things, including tranny filters not seated properly. Maybe be time to change the tranny filters. |

The torque converter has nothing to do with the transfer case. It is all the way at the front of the transmission bell housing right behind the motor so I wouldn't even worry about it unless your getting a shudder. I would change the transmission filters and drain the transfer case first though to make sure the seal between it and the transmission aren't leaking. If the transfer case empties just fine fill it back up and go from there. |
