| Post subject: | LOST POWER AFTER FILL-UP |
wife was driving her Liberty home after filling it up and it lost power. outside temp was around 100 degrees A/C was on cruising around 35 mph. She pulled over turned it off and after a few minutes of freaking out she restarted it and limped it home with the A/C off. about a mile from home she said it started running better. Later last night we took it out for a drive and it drove fine. She said she did not notice any black smoke from the tail pipe. At first i was thinking EGR but now I'm not sure. Perhaps something got to hot? As we drove around we ran it with the A/C on and noticed it had a bit less power with the A/C on and she told me it has always been that way since we bought it a few months ago but it didn't re-create the problem but it had cooled off to about 85 degrees. BTW T-stat never went past the 12 o'clock position any ideas or thought? |

My first thought would be when was the fuel filter last changed? Did you bleed the fuel filter head? Do you have the first gen fuel filter head, see Sam's NOOB guide video of bleeding head? |

I suspect you got gas instead of Diesel. Good news is most likely not too expensive a fix, bad new is a pain in the neck That said I am not that sure because of the evening drive you did... |

Hmm; I suppose gasoline is possible although the posts I've seen when that happened the vehicle ran like 300' and quit. That said if you added some gasoline to diesel (say half a tank or less) it might run badly and then settle down a bit as the 2 fuels mixed. I'm just guessing though. If it did get partial fueling with gasoline go to viewtopic.php?f=5&t=69714 and scroll down to geordi's how to fix the problem. |

OK I was mistaken wife had not gotten fuel yet. She was on her way to get fuel. When it crapped out. fuel filter is good and so is the fuel head and part on of the first things I checked after going though the noob guide |

On a hot day, like you experienced, its common for the CRD to get sluggish. Especially when you are under half a tank. It happens to me often during the summer. What happens is the fuel gets too hot. When I experience that sluggishness, I fill up the tank and it goes away. BTW, it takes a surprising amount of horsepower to drive the A/C system. So it normal to notice a small change in RPM and power when using the A/C on a super hot day. |

Interesting, never heard of that before. But only found 1 post where a person U-Joints was the cause of poor fuel economy. but Fuel tank is full I took it for a drive and kept the A/C on and the over-drive off to maximize RPM's one the way back home I hit a small incline and floored it and half-way up the liberty bogged down but otherwise ran normal. Yesterday the wife was heading home from her sisters and it had a slight bogged down again on a slight incline. The first time it crapped out it was a level road. A gasoline vehicle would lean towards fuel filter. Is this the same with diesels? Also it seems Oregon runs winter fuel year round does this affect it? I've notic3e some of you are running After Market Fans and Fan clutches. Can anbody give me the info on these parts?? |

Yes, this points at the fuel filter plugging - totally normal, especially if you don't have a lift pump at the tank to help. When the filter gets plugged, it actually starts to collapse from the suction because it cannot allow enough fuel to pass through it. It starts to show itself at higher demand levels. Your local auto parts shack should have the part number for the fan clutch, it is called the Hayden Heavy Duty (or severe duty) clutch. I *think* the number is the Hayden 2905, but don't quote me on that. |

Ok, maybe I dont understand exactly what the problem is or what you are describing... Quote: But only found 1 post where a person U-Joints was the cause of poor fuel economy. but Fuel tank is full I took it for a drive and kept the A/C on and the over-drive off to maximize RPM's Are you experiencing poor fuel mileage? Because driving around with the OD-off will definitely hurt your fuel mileage. Quote: I hit a small incline and floored it and half-way up the liberty bogged down Floored it? Really? How steep was that incline? What gear were you in? At what rpm did you feel it 'bog down?" When was the last time your fuel filter was changed? |

canonoch1 - I know you said the fuel filter is "good" as is the filter head. Obviously you can check the filter head for leaks externally and whether or not it's a 2nd gen filter head and you can bleed it (see Sam's NOOB guide bleeding video) but there is no way on earth to tell if the filter is "good" without removing it and cutting it open. In fact even if the filter is relatively new it's possible it's already clogged (1 tank of high % biodiesel has been known to do that). IMHO do yourself and the wife a favor and replace the fuel filter; NAPA 3647 or WIX: 33647 Mechanical fan clutch upgrade Hayden 2905 engages 25-30F earlier than OEM assuming the OEM even still works. Keep your metal fan if you wish, it's ok, or get the Mopar nylon gasser fan 52079654AD or 52079654AE . Do a fan shroud mod for access while you are at it. If you need how to drop me an email. |

Quote: Quote: But only found 1 post where a person U-Joints was the cause of poor fuel economy. but Fuel tank is full I took it for a drive and kept the A/C on and the over-drive off to maximize RPM's on this I was referring to the previous post of hot weather heating up the fuel and causing problems. This was the first time i heard of this on here. But when I was researching about poor fuel mileage I cam e across a posting where a person did all the normal checks but ended up finding out it was his U-joint that was causing the problem. I was the one time mentioning of something. And the incline was not steep at all. Anyway we have the 2nd GEN fuel head on it and checked for leaks and found none. It is time for an oil change so I'll replace the fuel filter as well. and thanks for the info for the fan parts |
