Post subject:  It never ends!!!!! Any ideas? CODE P0750

I had my girlfriend write this up, I am about 1200 miles away from home and of course something happens to the jeep!! I told her to leave it where it sits and get a ride home.
Any ideas will be great and I get home it right back to working on the thing again!!

While out today I had an issue with putting jeep in reverse. Shifter was stiff and hard to move into reverse. Once I finally got it reversed putting it in drive was no problem. Although i had same issue a few days prior but this time i was putting it into drive. Then once I turned out of the parking lot onto the road it sputtered as I turn left and wasn’t accelerating as fast as it use to. Looked down at my dash and noticed my check engine light was on. Any idea what it could be.

Scan codes, pretty sure P0700 will be there.

Report back what you find sir.

Thanks!

I would check the decupler on the alternator. I have the same problem. But this is just a guess because mine is going bad and the light dimmed when that happen to me. I think it's putting to much load on the engine. But what code you have will help with trying to find the problem.

Get a shotgun and shoot it. Put you both out of your misery.

(Or, tell us what the codes are) Can't really do much for you until you are home, but isn't that the way? The moment you are away, the evil Italian Mistress meets your S.O.... and all hell breaks loose. :-)r

This is will be the last!

All I could Pull with a generic OBDII scan tool was code P0750. Points to a shift solenoid? Any incite? Could this really be as simple as a sensor or wiring or is there something else going on!
Thanks guys!!

I just went through this myself.

You'll need a NEW solenoid pack $200-280ish. (Buy a new one, trust me)

You're also going to need new fluid for your transmission, and filters, ID parts sells a nice kit. $130 Includes both filters and 9 quarts of ATF +4 by Mopar.

Drop the tranny cover, drain the fluid, remove about 6-8 screws, drop the solenoid pack (be sure to disconnect first) put the new one in, replace the filters, replace cover, fill with fluid, done.

About $350, could be worse.

I would suggest the Transgo Kit (either) while you're in there, at least the valvular side and springs and cover plate.

Nice, was expecting worse news for sure!
The crud part is I just replaced both filters with Wix filters and replaced the fluid with new along with an aftermarket trans cooler because I had some leaks from the OEM cooler.
I have been having the anti-drain back issue with the slow to shift into gear and the cold start stall as if it was a manual and you didn't push the clutch in, could this be related?

Do you have the part number for the solenoid pack? and is the transgo kit a simple install and does it resolve the drain-back issue??

thanks!!

At this point we are considering just repairing it and trading it in, it really is hard to find a suitable replacement for this handy vehicle!

I think the drain back problem is related to the bad check valve in the pump.

Solenoid pack is around $280 from Transtar, call them to get pricing. It's a 545/45RFE transmission.

The Shift kit from Transgo is about $80 and it solves drainback issue in the valve body with a self-cleaning valve switch for reverse and stronger springs and a stronger cover plate for the valve body.

Your call on the 2nd.

The drain back problem is fixed by replacing the bad check valve in the transmission pump.
A new check valve is included with the shift kit but requires removal and disassembly of
the pump.

Or you could just replace the pump.

Valve body replacement isn't that bad, and I would trust that the check valve can be installed in the valve body by Transgo. I just did a similar replacement on my VW TDI, but that is a more familiar transmission to have VB problems.

You might notice it shifting a lot more solidly after this, but I do have to question: How many quarts of ATF+4 did you put in? I seem to remember that my 545RFE wanted to drink upwards of 9 quarts before it didn't shift like complete crap after a change. The dipstick read WAY high, but where the stick said "full" it kept on slipping and sliding when hot and stopped at a light. Hit the gas, and it would rev like you had your foot on the clutch half way down. That was with 7 quarts. More fluid, and it behaved.

Thanks for the info!
I read somewhere that it only look like 5qts after a filter change and quickly found out I needed much more. As I am sure you know, it is a slow process checking/adding fluid to these things! I want to say I have got 9qts in there now and I am over the full mark on the stick. How much over full should it really be? I have read that they like to be over filled some but didn't want to screw anything up by way over filling it!!

After this repair I am going to pay Keith at GDE a visit and have the air flow tested to check on rocker condition and that will be the final straw on if we are going to keep fighting this beast that seems to be determined to win this battle!!!
The crazy part is all the new darn "SUV"s are just AWD cars now and she is having a hard time finding a worthy replacement!

I think I was pretty clear in what I wrote, that it solves the drainback issue IN THE VALVE BODY.

I quite realize there are drainback issues at the pump for some, and that's a different item and different fix.

I'm either going to have to start writing everything in crayon or stop posting apparently.

It is a known issue that the dipstick in our vehicles is too long. The Transmission after removing both filters takes 9 quarts of fluid to fill properly.

Hexus,

Apparently we are talking about two different drainback issues.
I am only aware of the torque converter drainback problem that causes delayed transmission
engagement and 1st gear TC lockup immediately after engine start. Usually when cold.

I did the TransGo kit myself and and did everything in the kit EXCEPT for the resistor and
the new check valve in the pump. (I guess I was just too lazy to drop the transmission and
remove the TC and pump  )
It did NOT solve the drainback problem.

Maybe this picture will clear things up.

Maybe you are talking about the valve in this picture. (which I did replace)

Honestly, I cant remember what that valve does.
Maybe you can elaborate.

Post subject:  Re: It never ends!!!!! Any ideas? CODE P0750

That valve is the Forward/Reverse switch.

**EDITED 7-18-13**

I will add this for elaboration: The Forward/Reverse valve that is in our valve bodies is not self-cleaning. IF you do not remove it during your filter change and clean that channel as well as that valve, it gums up and creates an issue that presents like a drainback issue.

Think about it, the valve gets gummed up and dirty, it is the switch between reverse and forward. Every time you shift your vehicle into drive, you have to go THROUGH reverse to get there. If that valve is sticking and dirty, or just not making the transition cleanly it will feel like the transmission is slow to engage, because that valve is sticking and isn't engaging from reverse to forward.

This presents like a drainback issue with the pump.

The new one, with the Transgo kit, is self-cleaning.

While this will not solve a real "drainback" issue, it will resolve possible problems which can present like a drainback issue.

How's that for clarity? :D
