After 96,000 miles of happy motoring my '06 CRD transmission is acting up. It all of a sudden started to have issues with up shifting. All of a sudden it will not shift up, even at over 3k rpms. This happens occasionally and turning the motor off and restarting seems to reset it for awhile. Also the overheating warning will come on for no reason that I can figure out. Again, tuning off the engine and restarting will turn it off, for awhile. I took it into the dealer, who has done all the service and been very good and liberal on warranty interpretations and they found a bunch of issues on the codes but could make no sense of them. They called Jeep Tech support and could get no answers there either. The dealers advice was to start saving for a new transmission. Anyone with any thoughts? |

Jeep dealers are the last people to consult about transmission problems, they are not interested, you need to see an auto transmission specialist. How often have you had the transmission filters and fluid changed? |

All the service work has been done by the dealer when it is called for in the manual It was just changed on Monday when I took it in. I will look for a good transmission shop. Thank you |

Check the transmission temperature sensor, I know it was a problem on a few other members. Sorry but I do not know the procedure on how to check to see if the sensor is good. |

Hmmm, tranny just serviced an it won't shut up now? Two things could have happened (a) Flat pan filter split at seam from improper install and tranny is sucking air not oil. (b) Tranny fluid type and/or oil level not correct. I don't believe in coincidences..... |

I agree. Trans fine. Fluid/filter change followed by immediate issues. That is the culprit. However, it is not uncommon for this to happen with automatic transmissions in general that have not had fluid/filter changes for 100K miles. Did they use a flushing machine? The use of them seems to be associated with higher frequency of this kind of problem. Crud gets moved to a place where it causes problems. DOC |

Here is what I've learned from the Service manager at the dealership when I was having transmission problems. - Old fluid with high mileage on it has been known to create shifting issues when flushed with a flushing machine. - On occasion a complete dismantling of the transmission for cleaning is necessary. - the dealer will attempt a re-flush of the system to clear it up, this does not work all the time. - The dealership does not like to flush a transmission with high mileage on it that has not been maintained properly and has never had the fluid or filters replaced. - Flushing the system with a flushing machine will pull dirt through the system making it difficult to dislodge any dirt that is now stuck between the plates and gears. In the end he said to just keep driving the car after a flush.....proper shifting may or may not return and clear itself over time. If it doesn't clear up then that is when they go to the next step. Most of the time they prefer to just drop the pan, replace the filters and replenish the fluid instead of flushing with the machine. He said that he doesn't like headaches and that flushing machine causes headaches on high mileage vehicles. It gets expensive. |

I know this is an old topic but: My 2005 Liberty CRD has recently been shifting strangely especially while making right turns. It has also been looking the torque converter clutch at stops and stalling the engine. Because of it appearing to be mostly a right turn issue (left turn shifts fine) I figured it had to be a filter/pickup or low fluid problem. Fluid level was fine. Pulled the pan this morning and found the sump filter split along the right side and opened up for about 3 inches above the filter medium. Filter changed, all is well. The 545RFE transmission behave very badly when there is air in the hydraulics either from low fluid or this filter problem. If you have strange transmission behaviour and the fluid level is within norms, pulling the pan and sump filter for inspection can be a very cheap repair as opposed to a trip to the Tranny shop!
