The transmission is slow to get going after parking for a while. I've noticed TSB on this forum about this problem, but it seems to be very old. Is it still the thing to do is get a different filter that doesn't let the fluid drain from the TC. |

The typical symptom is initial failure to engage or fully engage at crank up after being parked for ca. 8+ hrs sometimes associated with a nasty feeling hard engine stall and a CEL that goes away after like 3 good drive cycles. If that's what you are experiencing try this - crank up; shift to neutral; hold rpms at ca. 1,000-1,500 for 10 seconds or so; shift into gear and drive off (if there is any hesitation at drive off repeat high idle in neutral cycle) - if that "cures" your problem it's tranny fluid drain back. Common cure is transmission service with ATF+4 and new Mopar or Wix (no good deal filters off eBay) should fix the problem but not always. Some have had to install the tranny pump part of the Transgo kit or the new style Mopar tranny pump to cure the problem but both of this steps involve dropping the tranny. FYI this is not a new DCJ issue as I first experienced this in a 1st gen Plymouth minivan back in the day. In fact if you regularly do the idle in neutral fix noted above you can drive without harming anything until it's time for normal tranny service like I did for ca. 20K miles at which point SunCoast installed my new torque converter and said the tranny clutch packs still looked brand new. |
