Post subject:  Diesel Liberty slow to begin moving after first start

All:

I recently had my diesel liberty serviced (has 105k), and the mechanic said they think my turbo is taking out because everytime he would rev the engine over 3k rpm, the overboost sensor would trip and would essentially shut down the turbo boost. He recommended I take it to a turbo specialist. He reset the overboost such that I can drive and won't trip it as long as I stay below 3k rpm. I've since been driving for about the past month or so and have occasionally gone above 3k rpm w/o tripping any check engine light. So i'm not sure if the turbo needs to be worked on or not.

On a possibly related note, about 2 weeks ago, i noticed that when I start up my vehicle after sitting for a while and put the car in drive, the car won't want to move and I'll have to rev the engine a bit just to get it going. Then when I come to make my first stop the car will act like it doesn't want to stop and I will have to really lay on the brakes. After this happens, the car drives fine.

I'm a little lost at both of these situations, not sure if it could brakes related or still turbo related.

Any advice??

The slow-to-start and hard braking are related to each other, and a very common problem. This is called the "transmission drain back" problem and you can find answers about it by searching here. There are a couple solutions for that, the easiest is free - Put it in NEUTRAL before starting off, and wait 10 seconds for the torque converter to refill. It won't do it anywhere near as fast in Park, so neutral is it.

As for the turbo... No, your turbo is most likely JUST FINE. Check on the MAP sensor (located on the back of the intake manifold on the top, 4mm allen key screw holding it down. The plug for it points toward the driver's fender, it is just behind the end of the fuel rail.

Chances are, this MAP sensor is plugged solid with crap - soot and oil mix, and you get oily sludge. YUCK. Spray off the sensor using brake cleaner and let it evaporate before reinstalling, should be much better. If that doesn't do it, then the vanes on the turbo could be sticking from too much soot... Have a read of the NOOB guide (sticky thread) for some suggestions.

Where are you located? Do you know FOR CERTAIN that the timing belt has been done? At 105k miles, you are absolutely overdue for the belt, and it is now 8 years old AND over the mileage limit - There won't be any warning WHEN it brakes (not if) - the results won't be cheap either. None of us want that to happen to anyone. I can help with your timing belt if your mechanic hasn't ever done one of these before.

Welcome to the forum!

tried the neutral thing it worked!

will try and clean out the MAP sensor next weekend.

The timing belt was definitely changed, I had it changed when I was living in Italy by Italian mechanics who were well trained w/ diesels and this particular engine (the CRD is an Italian engine) so I'm sure they replaced it, I did this at 95k.

Thanks for the advice.
