Well my work just told me I have this weekend off plus Monday! So now I figured this would be an awesome opportunity to get the timing belt out of the way. I planned on gong with the ID parts kit for $399. I believe that is all I need plus a belt tensioner as I have done the thermostat recently.

The only issues would be getting the specialty tools. Is the GDE rental all that I would need for the job? Also is the ID kit suffice? What else is recommended to do while I'm in there!

Thanks,

Brian

GDE only has two sets of timing tools and the wait is roughly 3-4 weeks at the moment.

idparts kit has what you need although you don't really need to timing belt cover gasket as that's little more than a relatively ineffective dust seal.

see http://www.beesvillebeefarm.com/jeep.html for a pretty decent write up with DIY tools if the GDE kit is not available for rent. Note though that you pulling all that front end stuff in front of the fan is not essential although it does improve access. Suggest you watch Sam's TB job video and if you plan to do the water pump look at replacing only the front half which is much easier and does all the WP moving parts so it's just as effective as doing the whole WP which can be a hassle.

The pins are easy to make. Finding 75mm long M10x1.0 screws may not be such a simple matter. I searched high an low locally and ended up machining them from scratch.

I believe that the standard $399 kit comes with the Graf pump which is only the front half anyway.

Yes, this kit includes the Graf water pump, which is only the front half with 2 (you only need 1) O-Rings and the bronze (rather than plastic) and slightly longer impellers.

When I was looking for the Bolts, the 1.0 thread was the bugger. Fastenal told me they had none in the state. I ended up calling a smaller hardware store in town and they had 4. The bigger stores did not have anything in that thread. I ended up using a friends wood lathe and some metal files to reduce the diameter to the specs given in the beesville directions. Dont forget the washers! Good luck!

Mine is currently disassembled to the timing gears and waiting. After initial research I thought I could do the work without the special tools. Of course after my first attempt to remove the cam sprockets resulted in belt, hex wrenches and that crap lisle tool all flying off in different direction, I realized I didn't read between the lines....if you do the WP you need the special tools...ESPECIALLY the sprocket lock plate. :banghead:

So, I called GDE and they're on vaca till the 15th. :dizzy:

Does anybody have the special tools elsewhere they can loan to me?

As you've found out most of these generic, multi-purpose tools are designed to hold the cams in position but not to torque against. I looke at a plastic on in Napa the other day. Yeah, as if that's gonna hold up! You really need a sprocket buster or equivalent or the next best thing would be the VM1085.

When I did my first timing belt change, I made all the tools that I needed. I used a couple of 5/16 bolts to make the cam locking pins (had to do some grinding). They don't screw in like the real ones, but I've changed 4 timing belts with them. I used a hex key to lock the flywheel. And I used a couple small hex keys and a piece of flat metal to work the tensioner. When I needed to remove the cam gears, I made a gear holder out of an old rototiller tine and two bolts. The bolts fit into the holes on the gears. I'll post pictures below:

Updated. Thank you for pointing that out.

Jay ne, good ideas as well. Sadly I don't have such items to be all macgyvery.
I will keep an eye out though as I have access to scrap from my job.

Btw, I tried to see if my local chrysler dealer had it or would lend it out. The service manager couldn't care less. He actually just walked off mid-conversation.

Does anyone have any experience using this tool?

The Metalnerd tools from idparts that are used on the VW TDI can work better than that, and the tensioner tool is a perfect match. MUCH better than the Chrysler / VM option. Use the big blue arms to hold the pulley while you use the wrench to break it loose, what you still lack at that point is an easy way to hold the pulley stable in relation to the other pulley. I have an idea on that that I will investigate on my next timing job.

By the way... Maryland is on the way, want an experienced CRD tech to do your timing job and water pump so you don't have to MacGuyver? I could definitely do yours on the 14th, possibly as early as the 12th.

edit: to make it read better and add dates.

No, that isn't it. Oddly enough, I was wrong about the tool. Idparts does sell it, but it is only listed as part of the timing tool kit for a 2003 Jetta with the ALH engine (among others).

It is listed as the Universal Camshaft Sprocket Buster Bar, and is shown in the image.

http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_ ... ts_id=1262

You don't need any of the other stuff for the CRD, but that bar is helpful. I don't know why he doesn't list it separately, but maybe they have it on Metalnerd's own website, metalnerd.com

Ordered this from idparts http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_ ... ts_id=1938

The sprocket buster tool is universal, so I didn't have to order the whole kit. $42+shipping, pretty darn good.

Huh. Yea, that is the tool, and I have no idea why I couldn't find it separately on their site - Must have used the wrong search terms. The timing tensioner tool from the VW kit is also useful, but that isn't as much a necessity. Interesting that it perfectly fits the CRD tensioner - probably because the VW and CRD tensioners are both made by Litens.

Why don't you guys make one? Buying the materials from home Depot would put you under 20 bucks and all you need is a drill.

You don't even need a drill if you buy the predrilled angle stock.
