I was driving and suddenly the engine started to shake more than the usual. I stopped, switched to Neutral and the shaking stopped. Then when I tried to change the gear to Drive, the shaking started again. So, I turn off the engine and wait for a few hours for the engine to cool down. Then I started the engine again and no more shaking... Who knows if this will happen again...
What could it be? Any ideas, suppositions?
Thank you,

Mine is a 2005 Jeep Liberty 2.8 CRD with 80.700 miles.

Might be "missing" due to air in the fuel which could be a one time thing but it would be good to bleed your fuel filter head and consider a new filter if the one on there has been in use for quite a while especially if this happened soon after a fill-up. Also worth looking at engine and transmission mounts.

FYI at that age (8 years) and mileage IMHO you really need to go ahead and do your timing belt. I know you are short of 100,000 miles but age should be considered also.

Humm, yes, exactly I was just coming from filling up the tank and this happened probably 30 mins after that. I changed the oil filter when it had 62.000 miles. Should I have to change it at 87.000 miles?
I already changed my timing belt just 2 months ago and replaced the water pump. Another thing I replaced in my car was the flex plate that was cracked. Also changed the 4 glow plugs.
But yes, maybe it was the diesel oil... Chrysler is not importing diesel cars to Argentina anymore because they say the amount of sulfuric acid that comes in the diesel oil we have here is too high and they can't guarantee it will not corrode the internal parts.

I assume when you say you changed the "oil" filter at 62,000 you really meant fuel filter? If you are now at 87,000 and had the problem 30 minutes after a fill-up I'd go ahead and change the filter. IMHO that should be done about every 20,000 miles and 30 minutes running is about long enough to clog a marginal filter if you got a bit of dirty fuel. In fact on a diesel it's not a bad idea to have a spare filter and tools on board at all times.

Yes, I am sorry, I was trying to say fuel filter, not oil. The only thing that still makes me doubt is the fact that the engine was only shaking when I was on the Drive gear and not in Neutral...

When you are in Drive there is more load on the engine, and more fuel demand. A dirty fuel filter will cause more problems at higher load.

You are right. Then, I'll change the fuel filter one of these days. It could have been water in the diesel oil. I've heard the diesel oil they sell here not only has a higher percentage of sulfuric acid but it can contain water. Real garbage from Venezuela.

Your keyboard keeps typing "oil" instead of fuel. :goink:

Does it vibrate in reverse as well, but I guess you won't know until it starts happening again. Mine is starting to vibrate more and I hear rattling as if there is something bouncing around in the exhaust near the engine. I've come to believe it's the motor mount w/heat shield making the noise. So, I've ordered 2 driver side mounts and will reuse the shield and I hope to do both before too long.

Sorry, diesel fuel.
I ll try and see what happens in reverse but so far it didnt happen again. The problem with this kind of symptoms is that you dont get a warning light in the dashboard, so you cant scan it and know whats the error code.

Mine does that too. It started doing it after I had my Suncoast TC installed. I think they busted a motor mount because if jar the vehicle by hitting a bump I hear a loud pop and all is smooth again.

In order to replace the fuel filter, does it have to be a Mopar filter or could it be a generic one?

Do not know about your part of the world but a NAPA 3647 or WIX: 33647 work just fine.

Ah, ok, so any brand could be as long as it is the same size.

Over the years of having my CRD this has happened several times. Every time I've had to pull over and shut off the engine, restart and drove fine then.

I have never found the issue. Its not the fuel filter. May happen once every 15k? What can I say, its a JEEP :(

So you think it is not due to dirty or watery diesel fuel? If so, what is the cause?

It can be a computer goof up. Happens to me every now and then. But do change the fuel filter, it's cheap insurance.

Like I said, I never found the source of the problem. It happened with a fresh filter, one with 20k. The fuel I run has no water!! I have talked to other Jeep non CRD owners who have had this vibration also. I don't think the vibration I have at times is engine related. Transmission or Front end?

That's my :2cents:

Good luck
