I have finally finished my engine swap after my engine let go a couple months ago. I got a engine from a flooded CRD and I have taken the engine apart pulled the head apart clean and measured everything reassembled with all new gaskets and components etc. I got engine running here now and had lots of white smoke. Took injectors in got bench checked and new tip gaskets and o rings. This helped for a bit but on my test drive tonight the white smoke came back and thick. The oil is staying clean and so is the coolant however when I pulled into the garage the smell was sweet like coolant. Coolant level has not dropped. Any suggestions? This has been a huge job and its now to the point where I want to get it finished and back onto the road, Getting tired of looking at it in the garage.

Was the engine hydrolocked? Could be several things:

1:Something is cracked internally.

2:Connecting rod is slightly bent, causing low compression in one or more cylinders... this is VERY common on a hydrolocked diesel. I have seen it many times before. I have a piston/rod hanging in my garage from a diesel that suffered such an event.

"Flooded" is not good. Not for any engine, especially a diesel. Good luck!

How many miles have you done like this ?

Only reason I ask is an old prank that used to be done when I was a mechanic in the air force was to put some grease down the exhaust pipe which when heated gave white smoke making people think the head gasket had gone..

With you rebuilding am wondering if you are just burning off grease..

Assembly Lube will do it as well, especially the white lithium style.

Also check your CAC hoses.
