Holy crap! Wish we could take the intake off as easily as you can on the TDI to clean it. Integrating the intake and the head is such a stupid design.

I cleaned mine when I did the rockers/lifters.

I took the EGR elbow off 20k later to check it and no build up at all.

I also got the GDE tune when I did Rockers/Lifters, I would have to guess this is the reason, because mine were horrible.

Is there a place that just sells the intake? Or is it possible to clean it thoroughly enough?

You can clean it in just a few minutes with some gasoline or intake cleaner. I've cleaned out 3 and watched another get cleaned out while I did the water pump and replaced the rockers/lifters.

I would like to try a parts cleaner because it's just less messy, but yeah it's not hard or bad to clean.

You wouldn't want to buy another intake, there's nothing wrong with this one at all, it's just dirty, thanks EGR.

This is the soot and particulate that gets into your oil, fun stuff.

Yea, do what Hexus said, gasoline works like a charm. Get also a bottle brush and clean the holes/air passages while gasoline is in it. Cap the map hole with something so gasoline won't go through when you soak the valve cover.

Wow that's bad. When I removed mine it was relatively clean with really just oil coating. Been running with the MAF unplugged and later GDE tune which I'm sure made the difference.

How many miles on your rig? Do you have a tune, segr or run maf unplugged? Just curious what state my intake is in. Thanks.

And that is why - no mods and 76k miles of nearly continuous EGR usage.

The three that I have seen the inside of the intake elbow on in the last few days, have all been less borked than that, but they also all had either a provent or an EHM or a GDE... Or a combination of the above.

EGR = dirt.
CCV = oil.

What happens when you mix dirt and oil? You get mudpies all around your intake. Yum. :furious:

Best of luck cleaning it, the suggestions to soak in diesel are probably the best ones. You don't want to use gasoline to soak, if the cams are still in the head. That could thin the grease / oil in the cam bearings, diesel would be closer to the oil that they need and more "oily" than gasoline, yet still do the job of thinning out that sludge.
