Does the glow plug light only come on when needed? Because in 100k miles I have only seen mine a few times most were on holiday in the Carolinas in the winter. I live in south florida. And if so does that mean they are going to last a really long time. |

Glow plug light comes on every time you turn the ignition on although it stays on so briefly that it's easy to miss; I cannot remember the last time I saw it. Might stay on slightly longer in temps somewhat below 32F. Cycle the key on while looking directly at the light and you will see what I mean. If it does not come on invoke the instrument cluster test by holding the trip odometer button while turning the ignition on but not starting the engine. It will cycle through all bulbs and gauges. If the bulb is dead there is a fix using a $2 or so LED and a good hand with a soldering gun. |

It depends on temperature. There's a section in the FSM that explains how they work. Note that while the indicator tells you when you can start to crank they also continue to burn for a period after it fires it up. I've seen it stay on for periods in the order of a few seconds at temperatures approaching -30°C. As for longevity they're a bit like light bulbs. Some fail in a few months and others last many years. Since they live in a fairly hostile environment there may or may not be a strong correlation with total "glow" time. What I can tell you is that the winters here can be pretty harsh and my first failed after about a year but I still have one original in there. |
