I'm at the point with everything taken apart to change my timing belt just due to age and being safe about it. The truck only has 21000 miles on it. I've done the GDE tune at 20000 when I purchased the jeep. I'm also changing the glow plugs to the steel 7v ones so I don't have to deal with the cracking ceramic issues. Anyways, would it be beneficial to go ahead and pull the intake/valve cover in order to clean the intake and retorque the head bolts? With only 20k on the jeep, there is a good bit of sticky mess in the intake... and also, while I'm in there, what else should I do? I'm thinking a set of samco hoses at least.

If you're pulling the head off, go ahead and check all of the rockers/lifters while you are in there. Specifically listen and feel for any problems with the roller bearing races in the center of the rocker arms and look for any weird wear in the top of the rocker arms.

If you want you could install ARP studs while you are in there, but I still think those are overkill (my opinion, not arguing against them).

Just keep in mind that the timing belt is one thing, and taking the intake off is another monster altogether.

At 21,000 miles with a GDE tune at 20,000 as long as you use good quality oil like Rotella T6 5w-40 or Mobil 1 TDT and changing it religiously every 6k miles I wouldn't worry about the top end.

If you want the comfort of knowing, and cleaning out your intake, go ahead, but it's quite an endeavor more than just the timing belt.

We'll be here if you have questions.
